The W163 ML has a common problem. The sunroof drain pipes that run from the sunroof down either side of the car snaking under the A-pillar and exiting the car via a rubber grommet which it connects onto which are located in the footwells to drain water via the wheel wells.

This grommet has a pipe which also connects to it on the outside which hangs behing the wheel well shield and water drains via this pipe. So water drains via sunroof along drain pipe in A pillar then into grommet onto the last pipe hanging on the outside. This pipe is quite long and flaps around as you drive and over time wobbles the grommet and causes the pipe on the inside to pop out of the grommet leaving all water drained from the sunroof inside the footwell rather out of the car!

The driver side is easy enough to get to and was the culprit for flooded footwell. I am cleaning the muck stuck in the grommet and using a cable tie on the inside to ensure the pipe does not become free again. I am also reducing the length of the hanging pipe on the outside to reduce the flapping and any more problems.

My question is regarding the grommet on the passenger side as it impossible to get to from the inside. The blower motor housing is fixed in there and i dont think it can be removed without removing the dash. This side is not leaking and the pipe is still in the grommet but i wanted to cable tie this pipe onto the grommet also so it doesnt happen in the future.

Would anyone know how I would be able to get at this grommet or maybe secure the pipe on the inside?

Sorry for the very long post!

Thanks

Hi, know this is an old post. I have managed to unblock the driver side, but like previous poster, I can't find a way into passenger side. I've searched everywhere, but nothing seems to outline this. Any help would be appreciated.

Couldn't get to it, and nobody seems to have answer, so its going to stealership tomorrow. Fixed price for fixing passenger side of £156.
