The passenger rear window on my W201 2.6 isn't working.

I've established that there is power getting to the motor...and you can even feel it getting warm after trying to make it work on the switches for a while.

I can't figure out how to get the motor and regulator out. I've taken off everything except I can't figure out how one releases it from the the actual glass at the top. The window is in the "Up" position so it's really difficult to even see how it's attached to the guide rail.

Also, looking at the wire cable, on one side of the big spool the cable is really taut but on the otherside it's a bit slack. Is that how it's meant to be?

I don't mind buying a replacement regulator and motor if needs be but I just can't figure out how to get the old one out.

TIA !

You will need to first drill out any rivets that secure the regulator to the inner door.

The cable is actually two cables, the bottom one might? be broken, if you cut the taunt cable the window will fall downwards or you can pull it downwards , you will then be able see a clip that holds the regulator to the bottom of the glass / rail, when you remove the clip the regulator can be detached from the mechanism.

This is for a W202, I think it should be a similar system but different layout for your car, see here…. New Page 1

There's no rivets to remove on a W201 - just a few small (10mm?) nuts/bolts (three IIRC)

It is possible to remove the regulator/motor complete even when it's stuck in the up position, but as it's dead and you're going to replace it anyway save yourself some hassle and just snip the drive cable. You should then be able to lower the window, pop the glass out of the runner, and the regulator lifts upwards and away.

Loads of them around secondhand for about £20 these days. Try and find one where someone has taken a minute to dismantle the electrical plug and remove the pins, rather than just cutting the wires off (as some lazy/ignorant people have done before!)

Good luck!

That's great guys!
Yes, I've undone all the bolts holding it in at the lower part of the door.
So just so I'm clear...all that's stopping the window coming down now if the taut cable? If I cut through that it should drop?
Thanks again

p.s Sod's Law...nothing on Ebay at the moment!

Yes, if you have removed the plastic clip from the end of the window lifting runner you can slide window free and the whole mechanism will come out.

It should drop or you might need to put your hand up and pull it down.
The other broken cable is probably warped around and jamming the motor and so preventing the motor from lowering the glass. If you can’t source a replacement then it might be best to leave it where it is, just disconnect the window switch to prevent anyone using it.

If you slide your hand up to the bottom of the glass Ali runner, you can feel the plastic clip that needs to be pulled down. Very easy to do.
Once the clip is removed, you can slide the motor/regulator sideways and out of the runner.
Quite often if you remove it complete, undo the 2 bolts holding the motor to the gear section, you'll find the motor works. Sometimes they need a light tap to get them freed up. Most come back to life...

I've bought 2 s/h window motor for my 190- one flat out didn't work and the other died after a month  Think I saw new ones for a decent price on euromerc, need to get round to it myself.

I think you were unlucky! I'd have asked for a refund/replacement if one of them was totally dead when you got it?

IIRC these were a couple of hundred each a few years back now, so when there's loads about for £20 or so secondhand it's got to be the best solution :)
