Let's just agree to disagree about the definition of an honest man .

Confessing in private to someone who has caught you red handed is exactly meeting the requirements, I feel .

In fact, the "honesty" label should not depend on whether or not, after the fact, you've been found out .

Maybe I was too subtle: his response was the result of having been found out. So, I'd just call it a confession .
