W202 C-Class C230K
Hello

The sidelight on my W202 C-Class 230 Kompressor (Year 2000) has gone. I could just replace the bulb like for like, but maybe now is a good time to replace all the head light bulbs with some better ones.

This is what the side light bulb looks like that I just pulled out.

Looking on ebay there seems to be some cheap deals for kits and this one here suggests it is compatible with my car, but I don't want to start messing with resistors to get the bulb warning light on the dash to go out.

Can anyone recommend an uprated headlight bulb kit that can just be fitted by putting in the new bulbs etc?

Many Thanks

Hi

thanks for the reply, so you think a kit like that one I linked to on eBay would give me issues with the bulb indicator on the dash? I would presume so them being LED side lights.

So basically I need H1 type bulbs for the side lights and H7 type bulbs for the head lights (Hi/Low) beam, will have a look for the ones you suggested.

Thanks.

That looks like a cheap and nasty kit, if it is a HID it would need ballasts and would be a lot more expensive, the description shows that they are not HID bulbs and the claims made about filtering and more light output are just nonsense.

There is a forum moderator called Killerhertz, he sells Canbus error free LED bulbs that work.

For your headlights try the Osram Nightbreakers or similar. Amazon are offering the Osram bulbs at around £14 a pair delivered,

Worth checking the voltage at the headlight connector, voltage drops due to poor connections, earths etc can cause poor light output as can cloudy lens

Hi

thanks for the advise.

Just been looking at these H1 and H7 Xenon blue bulbs on ebay.

They also do the same bulbs in white glass.

Don't want to spend a load of money on new bulbs but something half decent.

They say 50% BRIGHTER THAN STANDARD HALOGEN BULBS but not sure if these Xenon replacements for standard halogen bulbs are just all hype?

I had a quick look at the car, seems the side lights are H1s so are the hi beam bulbs. Main beams look to be H7s and I think there are additional fog light bulbs as well, not sure what size they are? Will have a proper look tomorrow in the daylight.

Thanks

You get what you pay for and those look rather cheap, also, why do you want to have a blue tint? Higher light output claims are meaningless unless you have some valid comparison.:thumb:

I believe that the 'side lights' are in fact w5w, and the dipped beam and main beam are both H1.

With regards the w5w, you could talk to forum member killerherz who can supply LED replacements which will not cause an error message.

With regards the dipped and main beam, a simple swap will be (as said by others) either Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited or Philips xTreme, or an equivalent from Ring Automotive etc. This is a standard filament Halogen bulb which will not cause any issues (other than somewhat shorter life).

But at current there are no legal LED substitutes for dipped or main beam, and aftermarket HID kits are expensive and their legality is questioned too.

I thought the blue tint might look good, but I'm not that bothered, normal white would be OK as well.

Looking at the Osram Nightbreakers there are three versions. Unlimited seems to be the latest iteration, and the Plus ones before that.

A pair of H1s and a pair of H7 would be about 27 quid.

Although if you read some of the reviews on Amazon some people saying they only last some months.

If I buy cheap bulbs and they go its not so bad, but if buying expensive bulbs and they don't last long that's another story.

Cheers

It is quite possible I don't know what I am talking about lol. The bulb that has gone and the one I have already taken out was a H1 type and was from the position as shown on my photo. So that is not the side light?

I took out the wrong bulb :fail

The side light is the bulb that has gone and it is a W5W type. The bulb I took out was the main beam, put that one back in and it works.

So to recap I think this is now correct.

Side light = W5W
Main / Hi beam = H1
Dipped beam = H7 ? I think.
Fog light = H1

Thanks

P.S Found that LED bulb thread here
