As some of you know, I won a genuine brand new AMG back box from EBAY.

The pics and description was poor, but from the look I could tell it was for a w208, so more than likey could adapt to my car as I know Shude has previously had a C43 box on his C230K.

The part was not an exact straight fit, but I took it to Top Gear in Aylesbury for it to be fitted who have done a top job. They make stainless exhausts from scratch and so for them this was no problem. They had to alter the hangers to prevent my bumper from haing to be cut and also had to weld the large (massive!) bore of the AMG pipe to my puny exhaust.

The result is amazing. It looks great. The noise is fabulous, but if I dare admit a bit on the loud side. It can tun heads on full throttle! I'll see how I go, but Top Gear can of course fabricate another small silencer for me if I wish.

Forgive the pics, both the car and pipe need a wash.

The join was done very neatly IMO:

The final stage of the mod was a call to my insurance company who are now aware I have "a stainless steel Mercedes backbox, which is not performance enhancing, but would not have been fitted to the car as standard".

looks brilliant ... and damn good price to boot.

Pity the seller couldn't give the part number when asked.
It is clearly visible

Yep, and he would have got more than £100 for it  ;)

Edited to add: Graham, does look great - make sure you polish it everyday though ;)

Yeah, I could jusitfy that just, but will only consider doing so IF the car ever gets dressed with a C43 kit too!

Assuming I avoid any trips to The Netherlands, it probably wont happen, but it is tempting!

I am still concerned about the level of noise the exhaust is amking. Don't get me wrong, it a NICE noise, but a bit louder than I expected. If it gets any louder as it cokes up inside, I might have to just have the next section of pipe and middle silencer up to the cat removed and replaced with a new stretch of stainless pipe and a custom stainless silencer!

Hopefully with use it will just deepen rather than gain volume, but it's already quite boomy.

Cant wait to wash the car properly again and polish those tips!

you could always sell it to GRAV888 for £150 :D :D

Graham - I would have thought that as the exhaust "cokes up" and settles down (ie, heats up and cools down a few times) it would get a little quieter?

I am sure you will get used to it though! :D

Cheers,

Will

It should get quieter as it cokes due to the greater restriction and sound deadening of the coke film.

One of the most common reasons for boominess is that the exhaust is too close to the body. There needs to be a minimum of 1" clearance.

mhmm, I had a custom stainless rear box fitted to my wifes 306, that was a bit tinny to start with but has become a more deep throaty rumble with time. It has actually got louder

Can someone with an EPC look up the part number on my back box please?

I think it's a CLK430 pipe, but it could of course be a CLK55 pipe if they are different at all.

Shude always described his C43 pipe as only slighly deeper, not the case here so am trying to figure out why.

The box hangs slightly lower than the original (hangers altered) so is not too close to body I doubt.

Still VERY happy though, don't misunderstand me.

I'm sure the CLK55 box, is part numbered A208 490 0601...I sold one with that number to someone with a CLK320 and they fitted it straight on with a very minor sleave...

I would imagine the 55 box to be larger diameter than the 430 one...

Do you have a price for a CLK55 box Ricky?

Cheers

My Remus exhaust has changed sound since it has been used and sooted up a bit, a bit louder but much of a deeper tone, more like a rumble/burble rather than a raspy noise.

I can understand how the soot makes them sound less tinny, but cant understand how it makes them louder??

The original CLK55 comes out at £500+vat, but the accesory one for the other models comes out at £260+vat

I could probably do the original AMG one at that price as well anyway...

Ricky

Graham; When I met you, you told me you didn't want to do any mods - ever since I've seen you enhance your car a little at a time, and now you're talking about a C43 kit!? WHAT HAPPENED!? :D :D

Looks cool Graham. A place in London had c43 front and rear bumpers and i think he wanted £100 each...................
