Hi all,

I have treated myself to a new pioneer headunit with an SD card reader, great improvment over the existing Panasonic unit!

I now want to upgrade the speakers, all of them if I can. Has anyone done this before?

I know the rear shelf ones are the bass drivers, anyone replaced these ie can you get bass only speakers that size? BTW are these speakers powered by a seperate amp?

Thanks! Ollie :)

Hi Ollie,

Just picked up a W202 C250 TD @ the weekend and I am going to be doing the same thing. I believe the rears will just be powered from HU. Not from an additional amp. I could be wrong though...I look forward to seeing what people on here have to say.

Cheers, Mark.

There was an option on the W202 to have a BOSE system fitted in which case the stereo had an Amplifier.
There were several options on the W202 on the speaker set up, depending on what was specced from new and/or model Sport/Elegance.
The speaker positions are,
Front doors x2
Top of dash x2
Rear Doors x2
Rear Shelf, under the Grills x2
Rear Shelf, No grill, (Bass Speaker).
You should be able to replace the fronts with 6.5 Component speakers, but forget about the OEM Tweeter just disconnect it and resite the new one on the door the other side of the door mirror, fitting the Crossover in the door behind the door card. You will need to buy some speaker mounting rings from Autoleads these come out at about £10-15 a pair.
Rear speakers in the doors personnally forget about them, they are 4" if memory serves and will need the door card removing to replace them.
Rear speakers in the shelf, can be replaced with 6.5 speakers in the original position, though again speaker mounting rings will be required.
If you have the single Bass speaker, leave it alone, as it is pretty useless, though having something is better than nothing, however if you do decide to run a separate Sub at some point disconnect it at the head unit.

Hi Andy and Mark,

Thanks for replies.. good luck with your speakers upgrade Mark, feel free to let me know how you get on!

Thanks Andy - I have the rear shelf speakers within the grills. I know what you mean about the dash tweeters and disconnecting them, what does OEM mean? Probably me being silly..

Thanks for your help!

Ollie

What unit did you buy? What differences you noticed over Panasonic?

Hi mate,

Ive got a Pioneer DEH-4200SD head unit. I choose this this one because of the SD card reader. I currently have an 8gb card, plenty of tunes at the moment.

The old Panasonic had a naff eq set up. It sounded very boomy or very thin sounding. Guess it was just a little old - ok for CD only. I wanted SD capability too.

The Pioneer has a very good eq adjustment, 5 band setting also bass boost if you need it (bit pointless due to the merc piddly speakers)

I would highly rate the pioneer, playback can be SD / CD / Aux input or USB. 3 pre outs for amps. All round a good unit. :)

Pioneer make excellent ICE stuff! ;)

I am going to be fitting my Pioneer AVH-P5700 DVD this weekend coming! also running a JBL 1200W Amp & Infiniti 12" Subwoofer, for some 'real kick'

AVH-P5700DVD (Archived) - Pioneer UK

I will let ya'll know how I get on, desperate for some tweeters, crossovers and door speakers, the standard ones are aaaaaaawful!

Have a think about how to get the bass back into the car if you are going to put the subwoofer in the boot.

I did try this option and removed it as there is soo much insulation between the boot and the inside of the car on the W202 that the bass would not penetrate, and eventually all the box was doing was taking up space in the boot.

Think you can get an under seat sub. Seen a few on Ebay!

Decent Sub & Amp in the boot, works a treat. Got to be 'DECENT' thought, otherwise the Bass will not penetrate very well as 'Vijilants' mentions.

I have all my stuff fitted now, and it sounds awesome, In my MK4 Golf GTi, I had the AMP turned 85-90% up to get the Bass to come through the car nicely, however in the Mercedes I've backed it down too 50-60% due to interior plastics, door cards etc rattling and vibrating. Not something that was a problem on my bit better build MK4 Golf...

Ollie, them under seat subs are a waste of time too mate? Still got a couple of Alpine ones I had in my Caddy pickup a few year back, I would sell to you cheap?...BUT I would advise strongly against going down this route.

Nice1, Mark.
