Hello guys, one question for the technically expert ones.

Are the w203 2005, 2006 front & rear SAM & door control modules fully compatible with pre-facelifted w203? (e.g 2002)

I am asking this question due to the fact that D2B was dropped in favour of MOST and thought that this may reflect to significant variations between the modules which might cause compatibility issues.

Any ideas?

the door control modules and front/rear sam have nothing to do with the MOST system. They are compatable. I have 2006 modules in my 2003 car.

Thank you for the reply. If I remember well you have converted your car to the MOST system. But my car has the D2B system. From what you write should I assume that latest sam/door modules are 100% compatible with pre-facelifted cars? Did you change all 4 modules? What are the latest part numbers you would suggest for my car and what do I gain by installing them? Also which part numbers you used yourself successfully?

I have a suspicion that my rear sam needs replacement anyway because of the following issues:

1) No wireless central locking with my remotes (only infrared and this again works only 70% of the times).
2) Optical ring does not work and comand does not recognise any optical devices although it is already coded to the devices (have tried 2 differend comands and 2 different cd changers just be be 100% sure it is not a comand/cd changer malfunction)
3) Electric roller blind does not work
4) Normalising of head restraints (headrests) does not work. Headrests work tamperamentally. (have already tried to normalise them with DAS, but no success to cure the problem).
5) Illuminated Door sills do not work.
6) Memory function of seats/mirrors does not seem to work

Also have ticking noise and flap actuation failures in the air-con but this is a different issue.

Does it seem reasonable to you that the rear sam might cause these problems and needs replacement?

seems like all your problems are different issues. Wireless locking = rear sam, optical ring has nothing to do with rear sam or dcm. roller blind = rear sam. head restraints = seat control modules or motors. Illuminated door sills = depends on where you got power. Memory function of seats/mirrors = seat modules or dcm. air con problems = actuators

Rear sam powers the head unit and VCS.

Seat fuses, blind, OEM sills all run from the rear sam. I think I see a trend.

memory seat fuses are in the front fuse box as well. the SAM does not control individual fuses itself. to rule out power, he should check the fuses and see if there is 12 volts going to the fuses.

UPDATE:
I changed rear SAM. Part number: A 203 545 34 01

Unfortunately none of the problems were rectified with the replacement SAM. Still having the following problems:
1) No wireless central locking with my remotes (only infrared and this again works only 70% of the times, works mostly after i have driven the car and during night time when it is dark).
2) Electric roller blind does not work
3) Normalising of head restraints (headrests) does not work. Headrests work temperamentally. (have already tried to normalise them with DAS, but no success to cure the problem).
4) Illuminated Door sills do not work.
5) Memory function of seats/mirrors does not seem to work

What is the next suspect component in the line for causing these problems? Lets assume that problems 3 and 5 are caused from the memory seat modules. Still I cannot figure out what might cause PROBLEMS 1,3 and 4. Any ideas???

P.S. (optical ring issue resolved: missing fuse 16 from rear SAM was causing the breakout in the optical ring: fuse responsible for language control unit) :D

Also WIS suggests to preform version coding for "electric blind for rear window" but checked out DAS menus and could not find version coding for "electric blinf for rear window". Is there such thing on DAS as version coding for roller blind or not? If yes, could you please tell where exactly is hidden as I checked it out for hours but could't find it? thank you

rear blind sorted out: coding needed :)

Problem list reduced to:
1) No wireless central locking with my remotes (only infrared and this again works only 70% of the times, works mostly after i have driven the car and during night time when it is dark).
2) Illuminated Door sills do not work.
3) Normalising of head restraints (headrests) does not work. Headrests work temperamentally. (have already tried to normalise them with DAS, but no success to cure the problem).
4) Memory function of seats/mirrors does not seem to work

any ideas please? thanks

1) No wireless central locking with my remotes (only infrared and this again works only 70% of the times, works mostly after i have driven the car and during night time when it is dark, and most of the times times I even have to press lock button continuously for 20 seconds to work the infrared).
2) Normalising of head restraints (headrests) does not work. Headrests work temperamentally. (have already tried to normalise them with DAS, but no success to cure the problem).
3) Memory function of seats/mirrors does not seem to work

you still need to check EIS as I STATED EARLIER. Check CAN VERSION, CHECK ICM, CHECK DCM

I have spent today time checking the modules you suggested. Memory works now. However no normalising of head restraints for some reason. Still no remote central locking. I saw also somewhere automatic memory "driver" seat but did not touch this as I only have just the standard memory.

EIS=>Read coding and change if necessary=>All codes
"Driver" automatic seat adjustment with memory : NOT PRESENT

Also checked the set values of CAN and gives the following values:
EIS=>Read coding and change if necessary=>Set status Can bus
CAN bus: Control Unit ESA-FL : PRESENT
CAN bus: Control Unit ESA-FR : PRESENT
CAN bus: Control Unit PTS: PRESENT

Tried to normalise ESA driver/passenger head restraints through manual and automatic procedure, but no success , maybe faulty hall sensors? Do they come alone or together with the motors? Still though not sure if it is 100% the hall sensors or maybe dodgy ESA or door modules.

Checked out door molude menus and instrument cluster but nothing seems ubnormal.

Regarding the remote unlocking: Anything else to check before stripping the headliner or removing the rear windscreen to have a good look to the antenna amp contacts and also the four roof ground contacts. Which one of the ground contacts is for the remote central locking? Also which antenna amp contacts are for the remote central locking? If it was you, would you remove the headliner or the windscreen to rectify the problem?`

Here is the remaining fault list:
1) no normalising of head restraints
2) no remote central locking
3) air con flap actuators/motors/gears faults

a) I can see what has happened with the remote. You bought the wrong TV antenna for your car and the antenna functions dont match or you have code 761 which has no remote function. These are usually cheaper antenna.

This is what mercedes gave. From what I remember because it is a long time ago, I ordered a different part number according to my epc, however they told it was superceded and they ordered the following:

Antenna amp part number: A 203 870 31 89

This is what I fitted. can you check it out and tell me please? thank you

from what i can see on my pc, it includes codes 762/763 so theoretically it should be ok, but again i might be wrong...

That antenna is for MOST cars. You could have bought A203 860 68 89

The antenna you listed is a strange part. It comes up as not being for TV but really is.

what i originally ordered was A 203 820 69 89 which according to epc is tv/comand/radio remote control

The guy in the parts department checked on his pc the black screen with the green letters connected with uk/germany factories to check stock availability and part number supercession but then he saw that it was superceded to the one he gave me and the one i wanted was already discontinued. I know that epc lists A 203 870 31 89 as comandAPS/radio remote control but what i think it happens is that epc has a typo error on this part number, probably the software person who put the data on epc mixed it up.

Anyway, what do you suggest to check now? Very annoying...

also regarding the head restraints someone suggested to me to forcibly pull the headrests completely out the seats and push them back in, then to try to normalise them and this might sort the problem out. Will this work? I am afraid to do this in case i damage the headrests.

Clearly there are guided tests in star diagnose. You have a star daignose, so I dont really know how someone else can do more than you can do.

Coming from the point of view that I have been encouraged and assisted by several well qualified people in the Mercedes "game" then I tend have more faith in the Mercedes system.

Seeing as most dealers (including Brabus) can't manage. I recall that parktronic arguement over which sensor was faulty and whether each sensor can be tested on its own.

Kiddo ... you are on your own.

I am absolutely fed up with the remote central locking. I think it is the antenna amp faulty somehow. I went to mercedes and booked the car under guarantee for this Thursday since I bought the antenna amp this year. They told me that if it has to do with the antenna amp they will sort it out free of charge. Lets see what happens. The guided tests show how to test the antenna reception however I do not own the appropriate equipment required for this (oscillometers etc).

I went throught the guided tests for the headrests as well but did not give me any furter clues apart from normalisation procedure not to work. Probably the the hall sensors of the headrest motors. Should I try what others suggested (force the headrests out and put them back in) before I change the motors?

P.S. Regarding the air con I will initiate another thread.

I think it is a case of too many wants and not enough professional skill. I would start by reading the owners manual and then progressing to guided tests.

If the AC is broken you simply remove it and replace all of the worn plastic cogs. All the threads in the world will not obviate such a need. My dashboard is totally removed showing the exposed AC unit ready for rebuilding and special cockpit wiring upgrades. If you are not prepared to do the same amount of work then you are simply out of depth.

Normalising the head rest simply requires it to be moved all the way up and all the way down. Just like the window normalising.

The TV antenna is either damaged, wrong, not connected properly or was installed poorly. I have installed close to a dozen antennas and never had a problem. Everything from SL to C and didnt seem to find anything wrong.

I also remember that you did your mods ad-hoc in a mad whirlwind of revisions and last minute additions whilst trying to vacate a workspace at the same time. I would avoid that type of planning myself.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS:

""I think it is a case of too many wants and not enough professional skill. I would start by reading the owners manual and then progressing to guided tests"".

WE ARE NOT TALKING HERE FOR PROFESSIONAL SKILLS/CAPABILITIES. WE ARE A FORUM OF PEOPLE SHARING THE SAME HOBBIES. THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME TO READ THE OWNERS MANUAL BUT I HAVE ALREADY READ IT AND DID NOT SORT OUT MY PROBLEMS. AS REGARDS THE GUIDED TESTS I WENT TRHOUGH THE GUIDED TESTS AS LONG AS I HAVE THE EQUIPMENT FOR THEM. UNFORTUNATELY I DO NOT HAVE ANTENNA RECEPTION MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENTS.

I AGREE WITH YOU, HOWEVER DEPENDS WHICH PARTS OF THE AIR CON HAVE THE PROBLEM, SOME PEOPLE HAVE SUCCESFULLY MANAGED TO CURE THE PROBLEMS BY REMOVING ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE LOWER BOTTOM DASH TRIMS AND NOT THE ENTIRE TOP AND LOWER BOTTOM DASH. I AM NOT LAZY I HAVE REMOVED BEFORE THE ENTIRE INTERIOR: FLOORING SEATS DASH STEERING WHEEL REAR TRAY, ALL PILARS INTERNAL END EXTERNAL DOOR SILLS, DOOR TRIM PANELS, ENTIRE DOORS, ROOF LINER OF MY CAR TOGETHER WITH THE ENTIRE EXTERNAL ROOF PANEL AND FRONT/BACK WINDSCREENS. BASICALLY I STRIPPED THE ENTIRE CAR TO BARE METAL. IF IT IS NECESSARY I WILL DO IT AGAIN, HOWEVER I HAVE TO MAKE SURE BEFORE THAT THERE IS SUCH A NEED RATHER THAN JUST WAISTING TIME IN UNECESSARY STRIPPING. AND THE RISK OF STRIP OVER AND OVER AGAIN PARTS.

HERE THEY ARE THE FAULTS WITH MY AIR CON:

1) B1390 COMMUNICATION ERROR OF AC BUS WITH COMPONENT A32M2 (ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FILTER FLAP ADJUSTMENT MOTOR)
2) B1598 COMPONENT M2/8 (LEFT DEFROSTER ACTUATOR) IS STIFF OR BLOCKED
3) B13A0 COMMUNICATION ERROR OF AC BUS WITH COMPONENT M2/9 (RIGHT DEFROSTER FLAP ACTUATOR)
4) B15A8 COMPONENT M2/10 (LEFT FOOTWELL FLAP ACTUATOR) IS STIFF OR BLOCKED
5) B13B0 COMMUNICATION ERROR OF AC BUS WITH COMPONENT M2/11 (RIGHT FOOTWELL FLAP ACTUATOR)
6) B13C0 COMMUNICATION ERROR OF AC BUS WITH COMPONENT M2/20 (RIGHT FRESH AIR FLAP ACTUATOR)
7) B15C8 COMPONENT M2/6 (LEFT BLENDING AIR FLAP ACTUATOR) IS STIFF OR BLOCKED
8) B15D0 COMPONENT M2/7 (RIGHT BLENDING AIR FLAP ACTUATOR) IS STIFF OR BLOCKED
9) B1100 NORMALISING OF THE POSITIONING MOTORS IS NOT OK. ONE OR SEVERAL POSITIONING MOTORS ARE FAULTY, OR NORMALIZING HAS NOT BEEN CARRIED OUT
10) B1340 COMMUNICATION ERROR OF AC BUS WITH COMPONENT B32/2 (AAC SUN SENSOR (4 IN TOTAL))
11) B1350 COMMUNICATION ERROR OF AC BUS WITH COMPONENT B31 (C-AAC MULTIFUNCTION SENSOR)
12) B1021 COMPONENT N22/4 (REAR BLOWER ELECTRONIC SELECTOR WHEEL) HAS SHORT CIRCUIT OR IDLE SPEED. IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS FAULT CAN BE IGNORED IF NO BOOSTER BLOWER IS INSTALLED

I THINK FAULTS 1,10,11,12,13 ARE NOT APPLICABLE TO MY CAR SINCE I DOT HAVE THIS HARDWARE, I CHANGED THE AIR CONTROL PANEL TO THE LUXURY AAC BUT STILL THE REST OF THE HARDWARE IS THE STANDARD AIR CON. DID YOU CHANGE IN YOU CAR THE ENTIRE AIRCON HARDWARE WHEN YOU UPGRADED YOUR AIRCON? DID YOU FIT CHARCOAL FILTER, EXTRA 4 MOTORS, SUN SENSOR, AND MULTIFUNCTION SENSOR, HUMIDITY SENSOR, AND REAR BOOSTER BLOWER?

A 203 830 00 32

""Normalising the head rest simply requires it to be moved all the way up and all the way down. Just like the window normalising.""

THIS IS THE VERY FIRST THING I TRIED BUT I HAVE TOLD YOU THAT THEY DO NOT WANT TO BE NORMALISED. I TRIED BOTH MANUAL NORMALISATION PROCEDURE AND ALSO AUTOMATIC THROUGH DAS. THIS IS WHY I SUSPECT THE HEADREST MOTORS/HALL SENSORS. THE ONLY THING THAT SEEMS PECULIAR IS THAT BOTH HEADRESTS DECIDED TO BECOME PERMANENTLY DENORMALISED AT THE SAME TIME. JUST A COINCIDENCE?

""The TV antenna is either damaged, wrong, not connected properly or was installed poorly. I have installed close to a dozen antennas and never had a problem. Everything from SL to C and didnt seem to find anything wrong.""

ANTENNA AMP IS NOT DAMAGED (maybe faulty though, tv works and comand works but no remote central locking). I SPENT ONE COMPLETE DAY TO FIT IT PROPERLY AND ACCURATELY AFTER REMOVING THE OLND ONE AND CLEANED PROPERLY ALL STICKER RESIDUES WITH MERCEDES DEGREASER. THEN I EVEN CLEANED IT WITH PURE ALCOHOL. I MADE SURE THAT I FITTED EXACTLY TO THE DESIGNATED AREAS WITH GREAT ACCURACY EVEN BETTER ACCURACY THAN THE PREVIOUS FACTORY FITTED ONE. ALSO REPLACED 4 GROUND ROOF CONTACTS WITH BRAND NEW ONES AND FIT THEM AGAIN ACCURATELY. THIS IS WHY I THINK IT IS FAULTY UNLESS THERE IS A FAULT SOMEWHERE ELSE IN THE CAR AND AFFECTS THE REMOTE CENTRAL LOCKING. HOWEVER THE INFORMATION I REQUESTED FROM YOU IS WHAT PORTION OF THE ANTENNA AMP IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOTE CENTRAL LOCKING, WHICH ANTENNA AMP CONTACT AND WHICH ROOF GROUND CONTACT OUT OF THE FOUR. THIS IS JUST TO DOUBLE CHECK ONE MORE TIME POSSIBLE PROBLEM AREAS RATHER THAN CHECKING OUT NON PROBLEM AREAS

I also remember that you did your mods ad-hoc in a mad whirlwind of revisions and last minute additions whilst trying to vacate a workspace at the same time. I would avoid that type of planning myself.

I AGREE BETTER PLANING HELPS BUT THINGS DO NOT ALWAYS WORK ACCORDING TO PLAN AND YOU HAVE TO ADAPT TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES.
I HOPE THE ABOVE GIVE YOU A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT PROBLEMS I HAVE SO THAT YOU CAN ASSIST ME ACCORDINGLY. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN
