Hi,I have a problem with rusting rear wheel arches. They're not too bad at the moment but are getting worse..

I know I'll have to work on them when the weather gets better.I recently saw a new c class with what looked like clip on arch protectors in silver matching the car..

They actually looked pretty good IMO ..

Is there anything on the market out there for my model..I've seen chrome strips on ebay but they make the car look cheap..

Any ideas??

I have had the same problem.
That what i did was cleaning all rust using a sand paper until bare metal then clean with ""alcohol cleaner"" and apply a lot of silver hammerite.
Rust was from inside to the edge of wheel arch. I have painted inside edge. Is nearly invisible.
Do it only when is sunny weather or in the garage where is warm.

I'm going to do that when the weather is better as the rust is just starting to bubble on the outside...That's why I want to find the protectors ...Poor design

C32 AMG???...If I was you I would not put any protectors. I would go to professional body shop and ask for advice. Bubble on the outside should be repaired professionally, I would even ask what to do to not see any rust again...like maybe repair it and get some protection under paint. I heard about some like rubber paint which can be painted from inside wheel arch (after is painted and repaired) to not get any hit by stone which can cause rust.

Try a company called benzworx they have a very good reputation and can treat the rust with a warranty

I'm getting my arches done professionally at a MB approved bodyshop soon mainly because I need my rear bumper resprayed.

I got a lot of paintwork done at this bodyshop on my last car and they also repaired the stone chips on the top of the rear arch lip. Sanded, cured, primed, some rubber like stuff was applied and then it was painted with the same paint as the body.

Getting it done at a bodyshop won't be that expensive and the end result looks factory finish.

There are a couple bodyshops not far from me but I've only used one of them and I wasn't too impressed with the finish on my last car so will look elsewhere..

What is it with mercs,I've seen a few with my problem, and the earlier models seem to get rusty round the number plate...The number plate????

Clivemecedes,do you know where benzworx is based?

It's what happens when you let the beancounters build things as cheaply as possible.

I have posted previously on this topic.
My 2001 C Class went back to MB in Beckenham and they authorised repairs under warranty. Sadly had to go back after about 12 months as rust had returned, repaired again then they refused to do more. Give it a go depending upon age of car.

Dredd32 where a outs in surrey are you? I'm in Chobham if I can be of any help?

^^ pm Barry above I have seen his work and it looks good, I plan on taking mine in, in the summer.

I can do any bodywork that you require if you would so like. just need to get the car to stoke,I will give a 2 year warranty with all my work.
I am a professional over 15years experience with my own small workshop. I wont charge the earth but will promise an excellent job..

Thanks for everyone's interest but I have decided to use a body repair shop recommended to me..Local and reasonable...

Let us know how you get on, as I have the same problem

Have had to put the work on hold for a bit...Definitely getting it done so will let you know then

Mercedes have never acknowledged the reason for the rusting on their cars particularly the 1999-2nd quarter 2003.
What can be gleaned is that Copper Oxide was not used in the metal at the time due to the high cost of copper.
Also Mercedes did not start Galvanising these cars until the 2nd Quarter of 2003.
Mercedes used water based paints. These paints are not impervious to water and rely on the clear coat for protection.

The clearcoat that was used was soft and when chipped the water started to seep through the paintwork. This can be seen as spidering under the clear coat. It is very important to repair immediately any chips in the clearcoat to protect the paint underneath.

Mercedes commenced using a harder clear coat called "Ceramiclear" I am led to believe that you will know if your car has "Ceramiclear" as there will be a "C" in the colour code.
Apparently Mercedes utilised different processes for different countries depending on the environmental laws applicable to each country.
This is a response from a Mercedes benz authorised repair centre in reply to a poster from the MBworld forum.

We can confirm with you that PPG’s Ceramiclear clear coat is a product that Mercedes-Benz co-developed and introduced nearly 10 years ago, and at that time it was the first clear coat to utilize nanotechnology for higher scratch resistance and reduced paint fade. Since then there have been several advancements and changes to clear coat technology as well as the overall paint process during vehicle production at the factory, not to mention changes in environmental regulations for chemical compositions used by the factory’s paint suppliers. In fact, PPG is currently not the paint supplier at any of the Mercedes-Benz factories in Germany.

It is important to note that manufacturer-approved paint suppliers vary by country as each country (and even province/state) has their own environmental laws that collision centres must adhere to. For example in the UK, Standox, Spies Hecker, and BASF are the approved paint suppliers for Mercedes-Benz collision centres; in the US, it is PPG, BASF, and Standox. In Canada, only BASF and Standox are the approved paint suppliers and you will find only one or the other at any authorized Mercedes-Benz collision centre.

We choose BASF as they have been a long-standing technology partner with Mercedes-Benz and parent company Daimler, and are currently the main paint supplier to the factory. From BASF’s product portfolio, we use the Glasurit line of water-based paint products as it not only meets the strict tolerances and requirements of Mercedes-Benz’s paint finishes, but it also meets the stringent low-VOC requirements as set by Ontario’s Ministry of Environment. Included in our Glasurit clearcoat are the same properties of high scratch-resistance that the factory’s clear coats apply, because being an authorized collision repair centre, we are bound to match factory finish. We hope that this information answers your questions and we thank you again for your inquiry.

Me:

Thanks for your help on this. Does the Glasurit line still feature ceramic particles to increase the hardness of the clear?

Them:

The Glasurit line and the factory paint do not contain ceramic particles for hardness; there is more advanced technology today utilized to ensure hardness of the clear coat and the composition varies by application and curing temperature, but typically consists of acrylate-type resins and isocyanate-type cross-linkers.

Hi, I live near Endon so might be interested in some work being done.

I can't PM you yet as you haven't 30 posts.
