HI Gang,

After the recent, very succesful, Essex GTG the technician at MB suggests I get the front wheel bearings replaced (at least one side needs doing)

Is this an easy DIY job or am I best to book it in somewhere.. Anyone know if this is an expensive repair or if I was to tackle it myself would I need any special tools..?

Thanks

No special tool required, if you want to do it yourself I will write it up for you

Hi television,

Why is everyone on this forum so god dam nice and helpful..! It's such a great place to read and submit to..

I'm happy to have a go as long as it's not too bad. A write up would be good and I would be happy to do a "how to" with pics when I do it if anyone else might benefit..!

Thanks

Thats MBClub for you then:p

PS. Any luck with your steering wheel ?

Hi Gurpz,

It sure is a great group.

No luck with the wheel yet. There is a guy in Germany who said he could paint..!!( dye, stain or something) one to my colour but not sure about this option.

Still on the hunt and I guess one will come up sooner or later. I was offered one but it looks real dirty and may just be really old an knackered.

Dont go for die, stain or whatever it must be originally your colour (does exist) for it to last long and match perfect. I guess you have to play the waiting game till one arises

I think you are right. I was not too happy about the dye'd version anyway.

I'm just impatient as I have the cluster and want to get it all done. I'll just sit it out and one will turn up.

You may have to use an indie after all

Jack car and place axle stand under the suspension and lower a touch so that the axle stand is supporting.

Before you unbolt the caliper you must find something to place it on or some wire to tie it up as it must not hang on the flexi hose.

Undo and remove the 2 18mm bolts or the 7mm allen bolt under the stand pipe rubber bungs depending on the brake calliper make. Lift the caliper off and place on support or tie it up.

Undo the clamp, and unscrew.

This is where I stop with second thoughts.

Maybe if you you are not good at engineering this is best done using an indie. There is a possibility that the inner race is seized and a special puller will required, also the hub has 2 bearings , an inner and outer, are you OK at removing these things, it can be done with a bench drill used as a press, I have to ask you at this point if you are OK at doing this. bearings are easily damaged.

Sorry to raise your hopes.

Getting the old ones out won't be a problem that can't be sorted with a lump hammer and chisel.
Use either the old bearing race or a suitably sized socket ot tube to press the new ones in ensuring all the force goes on the outside edge of the outer race.

As long as there is no impact to the inner race or bearing cage then the outer race shouldn't be damaged.

It's often harder to get the old ones out than new ones in.

See HERE for exploded view.

They are taper roller bearing in three parts. Whilst I can remove them using sockets in the drill press and brass punches does Comports feel confident, if so I will complete it

They are adjustable.
Could just need nipping up like I did with mine.
10 min job.

Thanks for the feedback and advice chaps.

Hi Grav,

The technician at MB Romford said the NS might be tightened but thought the OS would need to be replaced. Should both sides be done together (like brake pads) or can you just replace one.?

I think in this instance I will phone my local indie (haven't used them before but they say they have 35 years MB and BMW experience and set up on their own..?)

If they quote vast sums of money I may have a go but the problem is if I get half way through and mess up I've got no way of getting the car to them. (Unless I can find a mobile guy that will come out to me)

I'll post the quote and see what you all think of it. It may not be worth me getting my hands dirty although I would like to get more involved in these things. I also have a RR (2000 4.6 Vogue) and could do with some experience in mechanics or this car WILL cost a small fortune)

Kepp you posted and thanks.

I'm busy this weekend at Brands Hatch, but if you can wait until the weekend after and bring it down to me, I'll do it for you.
That way, you can see it being done and can get your hands dirty too;)

'wot a nice bloke! :)

Yet again I'm floored by the amount of help and friendship from this forum.

I am a member of a RR forum and they are quite helpful chaps but no where near this forum.

A million thanks Grav - I am in no real rush so I may just take you up on the offer. Perhaps you could "Wag your finger and point" whilst I do it so you don't get your hands dirty and I learn as well.

I'll ask the indie anyway for future reference.

I've now got a smile that should last all night... :) At least until the wife wants me to do more jobs.... ( and not what some of you might be thinking..!:D :D )

I stopped writing it up when I saw that you do need a fair tool kit to be able to complete it, though it could be called an easy job for dieselman and me it would be better to have GRAV888 do the job.

So sorry again to raise your hopes

Hey television,

Don't apologise. I'd rather have got to this point and know I probably am not equipped/skilled to do it rather than have bits of car all over my garage floor and then ask questions on the forum.

I know that if a job is easy enough for me to do with limited tools then I will get a straight answer and help from you guys rather than everyone just say "Have a go at it" and end up costing me a fortune.

Cheers

ps. This is not a plug but if any of you on here need/want any web work doing just ask. I'm a web designer and consultant and happy to help.

Well said. I have resorted to putting a run of weld on the inside of the bearing cage to shrink it (the weld contracts when it cools thereby shrinking the bearing diameter), to get it out before now.

Snap..It does work.
