I have the standard set up and not the bose setup (i think, no bose writing on the speaker grills)

I recently bought an alpine headunit and plugged it in and am very happy with it :)
But am I right in saying the standard headunit handled the speakers differently to an aftermarket one? The audio 10 routes only bass to the speakers in the rear shelf? Am I correct? Is there anyway of getting my alpine to do the same?

I was thinking that if the standard rear shelf speakers are subwoofers I'd just buy a aftermarket amp (probably new speakers too) and use the "subwoofer out" from my headunit?

Thanks

if you use aftermarket crossovers these will only allow the frequency range that you want through to yuor speakers , you can buy then from lots of places , ebays usually good for a variety , if you buy a set with tweeters aswell you can still split the frequency for both of them .

Hi,
If you have "just" replaced the head unit with the Alpine Unit, it will be running the same as it was with the Audio 10, except that the standard Sub won,t be working (if fitted) as there is no where to plug it into.
To be honest there pretty pants anyway, so nothing lost.

I'm a bit confused. I have 2 speakers in the rear shelf, are these the subwoofers? The sound quality has improved with the alpine headunit and bass is still good.

Whats the best option for aftermarket audio then?

If it sounds good to you, don't question it! :-)

That is very true!

Although, I was wondering about the best ways to upgrade as I'm always looking for better quality sound.

The sound system in my old car was pretty simple; components up front and standard coaxails at the rear. The benz has a few more speakers so I was just wondering what people would do...

I am also looking for replacement subs for the rear deck , i have foud sound wicked videos of some 6.5" replacement subs for the rear deck , problem is I cant find anywhere that sells them . I will be looking to run them from an amplifier and keep the existing speakers in the front powered from the head unit(sony aftermarket) Its not a bose setup but still sounds very clear . The one thing i did do is to take out the pieces of foam from infront of the tweeters in the upper door. I found by doing this the tweeters sounded alot more clearer. I just poped of the cover and removed the foam and out the covers back on .

its just a small square piece of black foam , about 1.5 inches square and about 2-3mm thick. I dont know why they put it in there , tweeters produce directional sound waves and so this would obviously muffle the sound reproduction.

Because the sound would be too harsh being directed at you effectively at face level and would become fatigueing over long journeys ?

caus ive got an aftermarket stereo i can alter the high/low pass filter to ajust , they're not pointed directly at you anyway so on standard settings they sound great . I suppose its down to listener preference , I personally like high crisp sounds from my music ( aswell as deeeep bass) thats why i'm still searching for direct subwoofer replacements for the rear deck

Was just offering my opinion.

I guess the designers at MB added the bit of foam for a reason :dk:

I'm not really into deep bass , although i do like to laugh at the children at the lights with their stereos that rattle the windows as they disappear into my rear view mirror.

same here , I always use Rachmaninov's ' Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini' to set up my variables ,its a classical piece but it has really high and really low notes - try it .

I doubt my speakers are up to it , just bog standard w208 speakers , with a Comand head unit.

what are you looking at to achieve with your stereo / audio..? SQ..?

i'm after a little more bass handling ,the stock speakers just dont handle low bass notes at high volume , i'm not into dance music , more of a soft rock/classics guy . the frots seem to handle very well but the speakers in the rear deck let the system down

i have upgrade all the system in my w208, and imo if you upgrade just the rears you will need to upgrade the fronts to re balance out the soundstage.

wouldnt fading out the rear a little equal things out ? what did you put in the rear deck ?

it would all depend on what components you are looking at using.
My w208 is convertible and setup with a 2 way active front sound stage with the bass sitting in the boot.

unit504 - Size of all the speakers (8 in total I believe?)

Do you need to upgrade any wiring or amp any of them?
