W209 Infamous stepper motor click inside dash

My broken cogs:-

Cogs1.jpg

sorry, my earlier photo might have been a little confusing as I was using a similar cog to assist with alignment investigation whilst I was waiting for my new ones to be delivered. You definately have a snapped shaft. It was the lug that snapped off mine which is the bit that contacts the stops. Worth checking your flap isnt jamming.

Yes looks like the shaft has snapped. You should be able to fish it out with something or try and stick something onto it then pull it out.

Yeah I'm trying that now. it looks as tho there is a hole in the center of the shaft.
I'm trying to screw something into it to see if I can pull it out. I've come in for a rest
because my hands are throbbing after working in that confined space! :0)

Looks like I'm gonna have to drop the blower housing if I cant.

Which bolts hold it in place under the bonnet?

Are they easy to get to?

Im not surprised your hands are sore, that motor is in a really awkward position. You did well getting it out without dropping the blower housing.

If you open the bonnet and remove the cabin air filter you should then see the blower motor and housing. Its attached to the bulkhead with 4 nuts. From memory there might also be a plastic frame to prise out as well. Should give you a better view of your broken part from this angle.

If you then remove the (14mm?) nut inside the car that holds the metal framework you should then be able to drop the blower housing a little. It will only move about and inch or two but that was enough for me to get the access I needed.

It's a little frustrating having to order a kit for one part though. I did get a quote to have a one off made in steel but that made my eyes water.

Main dealer I'm afraid. Going to be just short of £40 for the kit. I think the part number is A2038300032 but check with the dealer.

Nice. :0)

Just made an equiry with this website: Mercedes Benz Original Ersatzteile online bestellen mit Teilekatalog

Told them I need part number A2038300032 A32m2.

Seems like a good site, I was able to attach a photo of my broken one so
hopefully there wont be any errors or mistakes.

They do have A2038300032 listed for €40 but no photo so decided to enquire first.

I can't thank you enough Lecky, I would never have gotten this done without your help.

Top man!!!

Also thanks to Codger49 too, your advice and WIS pdf's were a god sent.

Both Top men!!! :0)

No worries, glad to have been some use. The part number I gave is for the kit that these two cogs come in. you also get a whole heap of other parts for other stepper motors so its worth looking at them while you have it all apart. I hunted high and low to try and get the parts separately but nobody does them (that I could find).

Good luck putting it back together. It is a lot easier than stripping out. A very common problem this which MB don't seem to have done much about to improve. You've probably saved yourself literally hundreds probably nearer £1K in labour costs as well.

Well done, obviously a man of determination.

If I had your symptom, I would be tempted to leave the air flow switched through the filter and trade the car in pdq.

Yeeeeeesssss!!!!

I can put her back together now!

Woop woop!

All done, and she's as good as new.

Except.... SRS light is on on the dash and MIL reports 'SRS defective drive to workshop'.

You guys said this would happen and I was hoping I could clear it with my
OBDII scanner but it returns no faults.

Does this mean a trip to MB?

Yes it need someone with Star to clear the code.
Do you have an indy who can do this?

Well done on fixing the problem. Looking at the stripped out dash would give me nightmares!

Cheers guy, took me a 5hrs to re-fit and only one screw left over. :0)

But I think remember where that screw goes now, its up inside the handbrake release lever.

Aw man I was hoping that this wouldn't be the case.

I went to an indy the last time, when I was having the occational loss of power problem.

He used a snap-on universal scanner, would that scanner be star compliant or do I need to
find another garage?

Nice one Coruscator, glad you got the parts and got everything back together. You don't necessarily need to go to MB for the SRS light. A decent scanner should do the job. I use one of these:-

NT630.jpg

Foxwell NT630. There will be others on the market that do a similar job. I think mine was around £200. I've used it 3 times for the SRS and an engine management light on a mates van so its probably paid for itself. Do some research if you are thinking of investing as mine is a few years old now and there are probably better ones out there.

Failing that you might be able to hire/loan one.

Just got back from my indy guy and his snap-on scanner has cleared my SRS error perfectly.

The garage is called: Rees Brothers, 01873 854383 in Abergavenny.

He only charged me £30 too. :bannana:

Fair play to you, theres no way id attempt that myself.

My old silver C55 started clicking after about 5 months. I hope current one doesn't do it. :(
