Hello
I have a 1999 e300 turbodiesel estate. W210 model.
My friend drove the car and whilst driving on the motorway he started hearing scratching noises from the rear and had a cloud of smoke coming out.
the aa and the rac all said it’s the diff. when I drove the car a few meters down the block I noticed that the noise can only be heard when the foot is off the accelerator and the car is coasting (in D gear). When the car was on the recovery truck I saw that one side of the diff and axle was fairly dry and the other side looked a bit moist.
My questions are:
What exactly is the problem?
How much should the parts cost? New and used?
Do you recommend new or used?
What part exactly am I searching for?
How much should the labour be?
Can I drive the car like that to a local mechanic or will I wreck it more?
the rac attendant told me that the way to do it is to empty the oil see if there is metal in it, fill it up again and drive the car a bit and see what’s happening and maybe then just change a part in the diff.
Is that correct?
Will the car be safe to drive like that?
How much should my mechanic ask for that job?
This is it for now.
I don’t know too much about car but I have common sense so please write me answers that I could understand
Thank for your time and your help
