Anyone had one of these w210 e320 cdi estates that makes a thumping sort of niose from rear passengers side when going over small bumps like pot holes etc its driving me nuts cant seam to find the fault i have had the rear subframe bushes replaced under my deminishing warranty but no change .it sounds like the spare wheel is loose or tailgate not shuting tightly enough any ideas folks ! :wallbash:

It will likely be the front rear sub frame bush.

is that the large rubber about 3"inch dia if so the dealer i bought the car from has just replaced them under his 3 mounth warranty agreement they were very soft

ok thanks any other things to check when i manage to get it in the air cos i dont get the chance to get it on a ramp very often . have you had the same noise on your avantgarde

Same noise...it was the bush, yours has been done, so could be the shock.

Well guys just been on a 200 mile round trip to the place i bought this car from 5 weeks ago and so far , after 2 previous trips they have replaced a new high presure diesel pump, brakelight swtch, both rear subframe bushes, headrest motor, thermostat, 2 small fuel pipes, kickdown switch, throtle position switch, they have been quite fair. BUT still not cured this medium strength metalic sounding knocking from the rear passenger wishbone area all the bushes to anti rollbar etc seem tight on the leaver pry bar testing . Now they say noise is likley to be inside the damper caused by ware and tare not to be concerened as it is safe and roadworthy and would pass mot test as it is. They say it is the valves acting under fast short travel on the damper. But this is FAR too heavy a knock that can be felt by sitting in the 7 seater with the corner striped out and you hand ont the chassie rail it feels harsh . Am i being over criticle like he would have you believe or do i have a point , i do think he thinks he has spent enough money on it and now its time to play the fair ware and tear card is there reason even plauseable PLEASE ANYONE ANY THOUGHTS WELL APPRICATED (sorry for the essay folks)

Hi

When the car is loaded up is it more noticeable??

I have the knocking in mine when it is lightly loaded for the 7 years i have had it and just learned to live with it.

Parts changed include:

Front bushes on the rear subframe
Balljoints at the outer end of rear wishbones
Rear anti-roll bar drop links

Hope you get it fixed.

It is a common enough complaint with these estates and different solutions seem to fix it. There are numerous people who have changed more than one part in an effort to eliminate the problem.

I will watch this thread with interest as i have done with previous ones about the same complaint and maybe one day i will get mine sorted.

i did take it to the local main stealer near me and they pointed out the rear subframe bush, full marks, but this didnt cure the problem the more i research brings me to suspect its the top strut mount its almost the only thing i can relate the sound and the intensity of the clunk with my limited technical knoledge but its almost imposible to test . It visualy looks ok but so did the rear subframe bush until you moved it with a pry bar then it was blatently shot . i would like to see a exploded view of the strut and its working components to pass judgement on the explanation given to me by the place i bought the car from all though they arnt dummies either so still not convinced metal to metal kinda noise to me spells ware/damage etc to other surrounding components .

Hi, I know that the topic is old, but did you managed to solve this annoying issue. I have exactly the same problem as you described. They told me that the cause is a ball joint on top of the strut. Can you confirm it or your case is different. Thanks in advance.

The top shock bush is just a standard upper and lower bush.

Same problem with mine, but nearside. It's at PCS tomorrow so hopefully will get sorted..

I bet a snapped spring, these go quite often and make exactly this noise.

My bad. It seems that the ball joint is at the bottom of the self-leveling absorbers, the one with the two bolts/nuts as in the picture below. I got the spheres changed and the springs are in 1 piece. Thus my question still remains.

the picture above is not mine

P.S.
Please, excuse my English. Regards.

W210 e320 cdi estate rear suspention noise

sorry guys been a while before i got a definitive answer my local ish indy H.A.LOCK Rushden Northants is very respected and he showed me a customers car that he was just repairing with the same very common problem . You see the picture of the shock/hydrolick ram at the bottom where the two bolts go this is a knuckle type joint with a rubber cushioning it is the rubber cushioning that fails although noisy it remains safe but to solve the noise the whole unit needs to be changed oem parts are about £250 each + labor OUCH !

Fun to Own

Oh the joys of owning a Merc:dk:

Well, it is fun... but I am waiting with bated breath on the outcome of all of the above "fixes". Has anyone successfully fixed this damned noise? I am planning to upload a wav file of the noise so that it can be identified, but some of the descriptions above are pretty close to what I am hearing... sounds like something loose and not metallic, with a bit of an echo. My gut feel is the subframe, front mounts...but we shall see.
So, what was the outcome of spending all that money...anyone?
