A friend of mine has a 2001 Y-Reg W210 with holes in the front wings due to rust. There are rust issues all over the car. He's never had any of the panels sprayed at all. It's so bad that the front wings have holes in them from rust! (yes, you can put your fingers right the way through!)

The car had full MB Service History until around 2005, and from then on it was done by other garages etc.

Do you think he has any chance getting the panels/rust repaired at MB under the corrosion warranty?

I think the car has to have a full mercedes service history and any bodywork that has been done must have been mercedes approved, but I could be wrong on that.

I think some dealers will take pity and arange for the work to be done, whereas others wont. It couldnt hurt to take it to the dealer and see what happens, you may be suprised...

...I will be very surprised. The car is now 10 years old....Merc have a rule of thumb that says they may look at cars up to 8 years old.

But don't they / did they say something about about extended provision for W210's etc or at least a contribution towards the cost ? - sure I read that somewhere..

No.

Why W210...all Mercs rust.

Because they feel more guilty about their bean counter operation back then... :thumb:

I'll re state then > thought they had an extended provision? unsure of requirements i.e full Merc history etc

They did do that but only if the car had FMBSH and I think was only up to 10 years

This is the sort of story that really puts me off buying another merc. Mercedes must be really scrimping on the panel prep and paint during manufacture. Or is it all part of the big 'throw away society' plan?

The Goodwill scheme operates for ALL Mercedes cars, but they will only consider it for a car up to eight years old, or ten years on safety items, such as subframes or spring perches.

The W210 is no different to any other Mercedes....they all rust.

And they always have rusted, W108 and W114 used to disintergrate.

Only problem is that other manufacturers famed for making rusty cars did something about it...

So much for the 25 year anti perforation warranty .......... mine is rusting as well ...... from the inside out!

For genuine inside-out rust, Mercedes 30 year Mobilo-life scheme will cover it, as long as you have kept to all the T&C's.

I've yet to see a genuine case of inside-out rust due to the inside of the panels being galvanised.
Normally the rust starts as "raw edge corrosion" and spreads from there.

Now mine is ten years old, I dont feel so bad about not having serviced by MB!

About 3 years ago, we bought the 1997 E300TD W210 that I'm presently driving.
It had 120k miles and a FMBSH.
The front wings had been filled (not a classy job) ... presumably by MB.

About 3 months ago, the wings had holes you could stick your finger thru.
I bought 2 new wings from ECP ... Only £79 each.
They are not the easiest job to fit.
However, they have now been resprayed and the car looks really smart again.
It's now at 155K miles and looks and runs well.

Needless to say ... It's not been near a MB dealership since we bought it.

What sort of problems did you face when fitting the wings?

The rubber seals round the headlights take a bit of fiddling with if you're going to get them right.
You need at least 3 hands to do the job.
Better with two people.

Thw wings you bought were similar quality to OEM parts or would it be better to buy genuine wings?

The wings were good enough for an old car like mine.
I do a lot of mileage in my old work-horse, so I don't need them to last for ever.
There's nothing wrong with the wings.
They fit OK.
The alignment with the bonnet, the door and the headlamp unit looks fine.
I reckon they were good value.
