Hi Guys,

I have a 51 plate E220 CDI Estate Classic which has very poos heating (compared to my previous Sharan,Galaxy).

I've read through the posts but am still a little confused...I'm sure (hope) that there should be better heat in the car and am wondering what could be the issue i.e. something simple like a thermostat (if that is simple on this vehicle) or something else.

Any help please guys ?

cheers.

Prolly the pollen filter.
Easy test - just remove it and see if that improves things. If it does, get a new one.

If the stat is u/s the engine temp will show low - probably under 80 deg C

Whats the condition of the coolant like worth giving that a change if it has not been done so, but as Ted has said more than likely the pollen filter.

If engine temperature stays below 80 deg C after driving over 20-35miles max then you have faulty termostat. If your engine heats up quicker and stay around ~85 deg then you might have problem with heater valve.

Thanks Guys....first step later on then is to check those pollen filters....found a guide on the forum..thankfully :thumb:

Ted....sorry for bein g a bit dumb but not sure what this means..."If the stat is u/s the engine temp will show low"

After doing the above if I need to change the thermostat......can I change it myself ??

cheers.

Apologies for not being clearer.
As alias says, if your temperature gauge has not risen above about 80 deg Centigrade after having driven a few miles, the most likely culprit will be the thermostat. This should be simple (and cheap) to change, but I've never done one on a 220 cdi.
As the pollen filter is so simple, it's worth trying that first.

Termostat will be somewhere around ~35ish. And it you feel ok with screwdriver and some spanners then yes - you can do it yourself.

Update

Just taken the car for a shortish drive circa 10 miles and the temp gauge stayed between 40 & 60...and left it ticking over for about 10 mins still no nore (dropped a bit infact) so it looks like thermostat ?

Mrs will be driving it tomorrow for around 20 miles so should have a better idea.

Have checked prices and they are £35 from eurocarparts.

I've looked under the bonnet and have no idea where the thing is...last thermostat I changed was on my mk2 escort LOL.

So any pointers / plans would be appreciated....sorry for being a pain guys and thanks for your help up to now.

Definitely the thermostat, but I'm afraid I can't help on replacing it. :(

First of all forget about Europarts and get proper one from Merc. You might save couple £££ but its not worth it. Get propoer temp one. You can go wrong that way.

Its installed on near side front of engine. It will be slitghy hidden next to oil filter cap. I might tight fit but I did mine in about 15 min.

allias....just got a quote from Merc...£39 inc so result :thumb:

Had to order it though and will be in Thursday for pick up....will keep u posted.

Thanks everyone.

Remember that with this car on tick over it will cool down, not heat up. The only way to get it to temp is to drive it. On these cold days even 10 miles will not be enough to get right up to 87degs.

Update

Well I attempted to fit the part the other day and all was going well until I got the engine covers off and actually saw where the thermostat was located  and i knew straight away that I did not have the tools (long ratchet etc) to access the bolts so I have to admit that i just replaced the covers and called my VAG trained mechanic brother in law and reminded him of the oil change that he was going to do for me and this extra little job :D

So last night both jobs were done and yippeee the cabin gets nice and hot and the temp gauge now show just over 80 degrees.

One big thing i've learned is that original parts are not always very much more than non-original and how many people just assume (as I did) that original would be a lot more.

Thanks for all your hel guys :thumb:
