Hi guys this is a great site and hi from Ireland.well basically I work in a Mercedes and BMW specialist garage hear in Ireland and a friend of mine asked me to check out his e200 it wouldn't start.so basically the timing has slipped a few teeth. Now I have changed loads of chains on this model and engine but I've changed then b4 they have slipped. So I took off the timing cover checked the marks and they were out so I removed the tensioner and said I'd time it up and refit the old chain and tensioner to make sure there were no bent valves. But when I went to turn the engine over by hand the chain just kept slipping on the camshaft sprockets. Now normally we just change the chain and tensioner and we are good. But what I'm asking is the chain slipping as its stretched or is it slipping becoz the tensioner is recked or is it the camshafts sprockets that are at fault.hopen someone can help me out a small bit as in quite familiar with this engine just a bit stumped hear

How many miles? We have never seen such issues with that engine... Only burnt valves causing misfiring.

There's 120k on it.how have you's not come across this problem at all it's very common on the 1.8 kompressor engine it's a 2004 if that narrows it down with the black plastic rocker cover we have seen quite a few to be honest. One final question about the tensioner when I fit the new chain and tensioner the tensioner works on oil pressure doesn't it so how will it tension the chain if I want to turn the engine over by hand if u now what I mean

I had issues with the chain in my 211 last year . The chain had stretched jumped 2 teeth and broke most of the teeth on the exhaust sprocket . I didnt bend any valves though . When I was refitting the tension er I filled it with oil first .
How meany teeth did the chain skip ? ive been told that 1 or 2 teeth shouldnt bend valves .Have you checked the chain guides ? these could be broke or cracked .

It skipped about 3 I think when I stripped the engine down to check the timing I noticd the chain was just slipping completely it was well stretched all the teeth look good on the cams to be honest so I'm hoping all is good and no bent valves. One question I'm trying to fit the chain with all the timing marks lined up but it's like the chain is to tight now this is the new chain I'm. On about has anybody any advice on fitting the chain. Oh and it's right without the tensioner fitted. Thanks for the info il fill the tensioner before I fit it so how did u fit it my friend

My experience of chains on bicycles (!) is that you can get away with new chains a couple of times, the symptoms being slippage when you stomp on the pedals, but there comes a point where the sprockets are too worn, hook shaped, and a new chain will slip straight away.
If you've examined the teeth and the shape is still symetrical then as you say it seems to point to a tensioner problem.
Good luck
Michael

I would be measuring the chain for wear and checking all sprockets for wear too.
