W211 estate buying advice needed

The facelift E220CDI is 170PS...

Looking at the year of manufacturer, ciouldn't tell if it was face lift or not, some 2006 cars had only 150bhp. Even better then, that can remap up to 205bhp:thumb:

Still to do: o/s caster arm bush has leaked all its fluid out, the nav disc is quite out of date (v6), the door mirror indicators could both do with replacing and I'm still chasing a slight "out of balance" noise when driving that isn't the wheel balance. Also, I think the tailgate gas struts are tired and could do with replacing. I want to get the cornering fog lamps disabled and UK mode removed to allow permanent temperature display.

Six months of ownership today. I replaced both cracked door mirror indicators on Friday (refreshingly easy and not too expensive), and have upgraded the nav disc from v5 (I thought it was v6 but was wrong) to v10. I've also gone around the boot doing some rattle-killing - thump floor, identify rattle point, fix with Wickes foam rubber draught excluder.

Incidentally, if you have a Viseeo MB-2 or some other UHI device with lots of flashing lights, that foam strip is exactly the right size to fit between the gap between the doors of the upper centre console compartment. Fit a strip at the bottom edge of the passenger-side door, and it'll be invisible when you shut the doors yet completely block the lights from the box.

The other jobs listed above are still to do when time and money allows...

I'm beginning to feel "at one" with the car now - it always takes me a long time to get properly used to "new" cars.

A quick follow-up, as it's ten months tomorrow - already covered over 18k miles!

I had the leaked o/s/f arm replaced, the cornering fogs disabled :bannana: and a new MoT test at Mercland yesterday for a very reasonable price, with a 1997 C180 as a loaner which was an interesting insight into the former MB solidity for me. :)

Whilst (ultimately unsuccessfully, because it's probably wheels and tyres) chasing my "out-of-balance" noise, the nice mechanic chappie found my airbox is missing all of its rubber mounts. I've also found that the coolant reservoir is missing one of its rubber mounts, currently bodged up with a washing machine motor washer until my new part arrives. Seems like the previous owners' garage must have had quite a few bits left over when working on this car in the past! Mercland are going to post me the ordered mount parts when they arrive and I'll fit them myself, as the logistics of leaving the car there were challenging given my hectic schedule.

Also, Jay tried to disable UK mode but the option doesn't seem to be available on my car for some reason. It's not the end of the world: I'll just have to put up with looking at km/h rather than the °C I wanted.

I've also fitted an on-off switch for the Harman Kardon kit: an unobtrusive black rocker just below the power socket. No need to spin the old iPod up unnecessarily for the 80% of journeys where it's not used.

Still to do:

  • more rattle hunting: current prime suspect is the tailgate trim, so I have some of the retaining clips in the post and will tackle that
  • replacement parts to fit: airbox and reservoir rubber mounts as above; plastic bezel behind one of the roller cassette metal guides on the seat back (cracked); one of the front seat rail trims in the rear footwell (broken).
Tyre wear is refreshingly light and even: the Hankooks have been on for over 16k miles and are still well short of the 4mm winter-tyre wear markers. If it weren't for my suspicions that they may be causing my noise issue, I'd be heartily recommending them.

We're off to France in it later in the year, so I need to shrink my hands down to find those xenon mask levers...

Good to hear your updates. Thinking of acquiring post-facelift model soon. How do you find acceleration? My pre-facelift model is a bit sluggish, Also, how is your fuel economy?

Edit: Wrong thread.

Acceleration quality is a personal thing. Compared with other cars I've owned, this is a rocketship; although I've driven much faster cars still (Jag XF-R being the fastest). My car is perfectly adequate. I don't have the figures to hand and cba to check, but I'd imagine the 20PS and 60Nm facelift upgrade to the OM646 makes a fair difference.

Economy - see sig. ;)

I've had a 2009 E220 estate for a couple of months now and I'd endorse Troon's comments on acceleration: there's certainly enough there for satisfactory progress, especially above 40 mph. Below that, the engine is willing enough but the 5G transmission is so high in second and third that it's often spinning at less than 1,500 rpm, which makes the car feel a bit sleepy if I want to accelerate without provoking it into an undignified kickdown.

By comparison, our ten-year-old Volvo S60 D5, with comparable power and torque outputs, is much crisper. Paradoxically, being a manual, it's also easier to drive smoothly in town: it'll do almost anything in third, and crawl happily along in a queue in first where the E requires frequent dabs on the brakes to keep it away from the vehicle in front. I wonder if the software mod mentioned above might help here; mine shows the same revs in C or S.

I still can't match Troon's fuel economy, though. I consistently get 45 mpg from the Volvo but the E is stuck in the mid-30s. It's still a great family bus, and I've enjoyed driving it over its first 3,500 miles with us.

I don't think there is anything between the 220 and 320 mpg wise, I really don't.
Unless you do all town work, or you make yourself sit at 60mph I don't think there is any real mpg benefit going for the 220.

Nothing wrong with it, and in a big bus like and e estate it is fine because it is that sort of car, but don't buy one expecting to get massive mpg gains.

I don't think the gap is nothing, but it's certainly smaller than one might expect. Using Spritmonitor data, here's some histograms.

The E220 histogram on the left (or first if you're on a small screen) is vehicles from 2007 to 2008 to avoid pre-facelifts and W212s (although thinking about it, the power criterion cuts out the pre-faces. Here's the data). I restricted it to autos only as the manual definitely has an advantage, but wasn't available on the 320. The E320 histogram (right or bottom) is from 2006 to 2008 as the facelift made no difference to the V6, but I needed to avoid picking up any I6 cars. The one remaining variable is estate versus saloon which I've made no effort to correct.

There is a clear visible difference of a couple of mpg in the 220s favour, but I guess that people who are interested in economy and have bought a 220 may naturally drive more economically. I doubt there's much statistical significance in the result given the small sample size, though.

^ that's too close for me, if it was 40mpg against 50mpg maybe but a couple of mpg difference?

E320 every time :)

Mines the IL6 (with D6) and does over 40mpg no probs on a run :)

You probably find buying second hand the E320's also have a higher list of options?

Also, there is more difference between saloon and estate than engine size I reckon.

I bet an E320cdi saloon would get the same, if not better, mpg than an E220cdi estate.

I always think that finding a car that is geared to your style of driving makes the most difference, if you like to sit at 85mph and you get one that is sitting at 1700rpm at 85mph you will probably see great mpg figures whether it is a 3 litre V6 or a 2 litre 4 pot.
I had a 123d auto, if you sat at 55mph it would do mid 60's, but get to 80mph and it was doing 2800rpm and 42mpg.

In my 320cdi I drive mostly on motorways driving up 80mph/1900rpm where possible and get around 40mpg. I could probably get nearer 45mpg from a facelift S211 E220 but I'm not that bothered in 5mpg difference and the Brabus D6 320cdi is never left wanting for pace. I guess that the in the S212 the difference between the e250cdi and e320cdi is greater even at motorway speeds.

Again, I think it depends, the E250cdi does well with the new 7g+ 'box, but a newer E350 with the 7g+ will better the older E250 with the 5 speed 'box.

Also, the E250 likes 70mph, get up to 80mph and I found there was very little in it between the 250 and 350. Both retruning mid 40s.

If you can sit at 70mph though the 250 will see mid to high 50's, just that I can't.

They are- 250Cdi 7G+ is even better :)

You see, I need to come round to this. I want to, as I want a CLSshooting brake at some point.

I think I've driven a 7g plus. My old mans S350blutech is listed on the MB website of having 7g plus, but it clonks (not severely) into 1st from 2nd when stopping, otherwise its fine, a tad slow shifting but in a car like that I am not bothered. However, other than being a bit smoother, it feels just like a 7g.

I really wonder if the website is wrong as it just seems the way 7g should be, i.e. ok rather than brilliant and not as good as my 5g car.

Saw my first Shooting Brake yesterday. Better looking than the saloon - in line with the rest of the current MB range - and avoids the trap of looking like a Vauxhall Insignia, unlike the XF Sportbrake. (Honestly, 'Sportbrake'!)

I must be getting old, though, because it didn't make me want to swap my S211 for one. I love the space in that car; I'd miss the echo if I went for a CLS instead.

I had been thinking I liked the Shooting Brake but when I saw one in Greenoaks Reading yesterday I was underwhelmed. Also the price was £63,000 which for a cooking 3 litre diesel the same as in far cheaper Mercs seemed excessive.
