Hello everyone,
I know this type of question has been posed before, however I can't find anything quite the same problem as what I have so hopefully someone can help!
I bought a 06 plate E320 CDI (the V6 sport) in December with 80k on the clock. After owning the car for a couple of weeks (and after a gearbox service at Howard Williams in Birmingham) the gearbox stuck in 3rd gear and would only come out of third once I turned off the ignition and restarted. I took it back to the garage and there was an old gearbox fault code per the STAR system, however nothing current. They reset the sensor for me, but things have since got more strange.
The gearbox has become more and more 'unpredictable'. I have driven these cars before and the box is super smooth and it learns your driving style really well. However in my current car it behaves differently each day I drive it! It is relatively smooth at changing gear, however doesn't seem to remember my driving style, so is often in the wrong gear when approaching a junction, despite me 'blipping' the throttle, which ordinarily causes the car to change down. When I apply a lot of throttle, there is sometimes a lot of lag on the change down and then it will change down two gears and send the revs sky high! I therefore have very little faith when driving the car, specificlly in pulling out at roundabouts etc.
The gearbox has also started to stick in gear more and more. It never happens when cold nor on short journeys. It seems to happen when the car has been running for around 20-30 minutes and even happened twice on the motorway recently during the same journey.
Having read the posts on the forums, I am thinking this may be either knackered speed sensors in the valve body, a dodgy gearbox control unit or maybe a dodgy battery?
The battery point is interesting, as another slight quirk with my car is that sometimes when I start it, the radio resets back to the preset number 1 and also reactivates the traffic programme! Could this also be a potential outcome of a dodgy battery?
I have had the 'battery protection' warning come up a couple of times on start up (where certain electronic options have been temporarily suspended), however this doesn't last long and is normally on a cold morning. The car certainly doesn't struggle to start.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? I don't really want to spend a lot of money on the car and am concerned that this could prove expensive. Please help!
