W211 possible SBC pump failure

Just got a call from them - 900 pounds for new pump and 350 pounds for labour.... (speechless)

It is a consumable part, at least you can drive the car with confidence once fixed.

Was that from BMERC, who thought it was the ESP, or Wayne Gates?

"I'm happy owner of E320, W211, 53 plate, 120k." Not perhaps quite so happy now? I know I won't be if/when mine goes, but as the man said, it's a consumable, so when it goes, you have to replace it. Did you know of the likely cost of the fix for this known Achilles' heel when you bought the car?

Couldn't agree more, I would feel much more confident with brakes fixed. It's just that thought whether it has really failed, the manufacture serial says July '08 and was hopping it would be something else.

E55BOF - it's from BMERC. Well what can I do, I'm not happy right now but still love the car. I knew about that before but I was told the pump was replaced.

Started to explore my other options - what about used unit from ebay ? I can see they are being sold for around 300/400 pounds ?

Thanks.

I generally steer clear of buying used parts on eBay, especially if they're parts that are known to wear out.

I believe Bosch now do a exchange unit now , around £500 .

If that's the correct manufacturer number it costs 616 pounds pre-exchange OR 480 pounds repair of the pump motor.

^Has anyone actually done an SBC exchange pump from Bosch?

I've read about it numerous times but haven't heard of any UK Bosch dealer doing it. I believe the pump has to be exchanged in Germany. I'm sure an email to the German division would clarify things. Certainly worth it if you can save £400.

Unfortunately, even pumps replaced under goodwill,as yours appears to be, are failing. There is no set time when it happens, just determined by the amount of use.

Sent them email to ask how it works.

Agreed on the failure and replacement but it's horrendous bill, almost 1/3 of the cars price.

It is but then these cars are capable of huge mileages if serviced and looked after.

Only recently a thread revealed some 300k / 600k examples - which you will claw back some of your outlay in depreciation saved on a newer vehicle (which in itself won't guarantee no grief - in fact quite the opposite now it seems with smaller higher power engines).

I would personally grit your teeth, get a second opinion from WG and then go with the replacement if that is what is required.

Well said mate. This was one of the reasons why I bought MB 53 plate instead of Honda Civic (06/07 or newer).

Ok, took the car to another chap nearby who checked it and said it was the counter and left the car for almost a week so he cat reset the counter!! Got a call from him saying that despite counter being reset the car still gives the error message i.e. it is indeed the hydraulic unit that has failed.I'm waiting on him to give me contacts on some other chaps in Kent who can recycle the SBC unit.

In the meanwhile I wrote email to Bosch repair service in Germany and they said that any garage can register with them. They will pre-exchange the unit for 616GBP or repair it for 480 GBP after they receive it.

Be interesting to find out who the contacts in Kent are once you know...

You've got a step further with Bosch there, I believe.

Some progress here.

The contacts in Kent turns out to be the global company BBA-REMAN. Indeed they can remanufacture the unit and will give 2y warranty:
BBA reman. ABS, ecu's, throttle bodies, air mass meters, MFD and catalytic converters

I'm trying to contact them for 30mins to get a quote.

An option I saw in another thread was to buy it from Germany:
BOSCH ABS / SBC Hydraulikaggregat, Bremsanlage 0 986 483 002 (560 GBP)

I gave Car Service & MOT From Bosch a call and asked if I can buy new unit or if they repair the old one. They forwarded me to Bosch Automotive UK and Bosch Car Service - For Bosch approved garages, automotive car spare parts, diagnostics, test equipment, Engine Management Systems, car maintenance and workshop tools and they said that I need to speak with my local garage ?! They didn't know anything about Bosch repair service either.

I think my understanding from the previous thread on this:

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/whee...sion/185482-w211-e-class-sbc-interesting.html

...which is a longer-running thread about the whole SBC pump situation, was that Bosch aren't seemingly keen to be openly repairing / replacing these units.

I don't know if anyone from here has successfully bought a replacement unit from Bosch or had their unit reconditioned as yet!

Saying that, I'd not heard about BBA-REMAN offering that until you posted it but again, not sure if anyone from here has gone that route either!

It's a bit of a nightmare to resolve something that is seemingly quite simply.

Unfortunately they only do a reset. However they can deliver a new unit from Bosch repair service in Germany for abour 3-4 working days and it will cost 920 GBP. As it's exchange they will need the old one.

The quote I had from MB was around 1100.
