I'm getting closer to buying an E220 cdi auto estate, hopefully 2008 with a low mileage. I am aware that I can get a service plan through MB at a cost of £2430 for 3yrs/36000 miles. This includes total care + tyres.

I have no experience of how the brakes/tyres/ etc wear on these cars. Anyone give me an idea of wear rates, and whether the plan is a good idea or not please?

Many thanks.

I've done 14K approx since buying the car & haven't changed pad's or tyres yet!

My rough estimates would be that over 3yrs/36,000 mile you would need;

A service
B service
6 tyres
front discs
front pads (x2?)
rear pads ?

So the £2430 doesn't sounds like much of a discount to me.
Stick to the main dealer for servicing and go to a specialist indepedent for consumables.

edit: this lease webiste adds £30/month for service + tyres

That link was fun, managed to get the monthly payments up to over £1k :D

Depends how you drive. I think I'm light footed on both pedals.

My car is at 39K. Front tyres are original and still have a bit of wear left. Rears lasted 25K.

Front pads are original. Rears were changed at 35K because one of the pads was sticking and causing a squeal. If that hadn't happened I'd still be on the original rears.

Plan looks marginal for an in-warranty young car unless you hammer it.

My car is almost four years old. First service was done by MB before I bought it. Total costs to date for 26K miles in my ownership are:

Dealer Service D £410
Dealer Service B £290
Indy Rear tyres £186
Indy Rear pads £116
Indy ATF change £132
-------------------------------
Total £1134

I'm due a Service F before the summer - car will be over 4 years. I'm assuming that it will be reasonable an Indy - no more than the dealer Service D. I'll need new front tyres.

That would put the costs of doing 36K miles at around £1134 + £186 + £410 --> £1730. Even if the front pads have to be changed then that would come in at around £1850 all in.

If the Total Care includes the equivalent of a warranty after the car is 3 years old then that is worth extra. However it's also worth figuring that dealers are becoming more negotiable on pricing.

I *think* you can only take thise plans on brand-new cars now - you may want to check (pls report back) and if so, then that makes the decision for you.

I think £2430 is an insane amount for 3yrs/36K. If it's going to cost that much to look after it then that would put me off buying the car.

The annoying thing is that the maintenance procedure under these schemes is much more minimal than if you're paying cash. I have ServicePlus and it's astonishing how little servicing the car "needs" - they tell me all sorts of stuff and when I say it's on ServicePlus suddenly all that work doesn't need doing.

My local dealer (MB Chester) would do an A service for £199 and a B for £299 so your 3 yrs servicing should only cost £700. Plus £60? for brake fluid at 2 years.
Unless you're heavy on brakes then there's every chance the pads will last 36K, but even if you were heavy on them you shouldn't need more than 1 set of front pads (if paying yourself you'll no doubt "need" pads and disks all round at 2yrs)
Tyres on maint contracts are a nightmare - it's the thing I always hated about company cars. They won't change them unless they're bordering on illegal and they'll often only fit certain makes. You could quite easily get through 6 tyres, but you might only wear out a pair of rears.

We use our ML - a big heavy car, supposedly hard on brakes - for stop/start local driving, towing, etc and even for us pads last 30k miles. It's about £1k to replace all discs and pads at the dealer though!!
