I started out just looking for updated maps for my just purchased 2000 (W) S320 CDi. The disc in there (a CD I think?) is for 99 and hasn't got half of the streets I have looked for (where I work, my girlfriends house...). So I would like to buy up to date maps.

Then I find out that I need to be a technocal whiz kid to figure ourt what discs to buy - CD's or DVD's - COMAND or COMAND-APS, so it goes.

Then I read about a firmware upgrade - and I find this download - http://www.geocities.com/comand12000/ - but as its a WS230 (W230 589 00 22 00) not WS220 (and my car is a W220 I've been told by a kind bloke on another forum), maybe its not the right update?

I don't want to screw my system up. Can anyone give me some advice - please? Please keep it fairly simple, I'm new to all this. My last car was a BMW...

I'm in the UK, btw.

Thanks

Robert

Welcome to the forum. You're right to be cautious about updating your COMAND. I'm not familiar with the installation in your S Class but can tell you that firmware upgrades are separate to updates to the Navigation disk.

Someone on the forum with more knowledge about your particular system my well reply before long. Alternatively, it may pay you to chat with your local MB dealer to find out which navigation upgrade disk is right for your car and whether you will need to upgrade the firmware as well. You will probably have to persuade them to let you talk direct to someone from the shop floor who actually knows the system.

Alfie is our Comand expert, if and when he comes on line he will advise you.Or you coud pm him. Welcome .

I am pretty sure you will have a 2.5 comand. The screen is more or less square with the numbers pad alongside to the right and some other controls below. If you do, you cannot run the DX disc and the firmware download from geocities will also not work. There is a firmware upgrade, but I would be surprised if it not already installed. The firmware for a 2.5 will not show the mercedes logo so you can't use that as a guide to whether its is installed or not. I speak from slightly bitter experience:(
look http://www.bluespot.co.uk/nav_cdrom.asp here to see if the S class comand system is yours. S clas from 1999 to 2003 had the 2.5 fitted

Your comand is almost definately COMAND 2.5 which is Cd based.

Your car may or may not already have the update on it. Can you take a look at the existing disk and see if it says Teleatls DX anywhere on it?

We can then advise on the right disks for you to use.

If you need the update disc, it is available from your MB dealer for about £10 as is part number 220 589 22 00, but as said in my previous post, it is more than likeley already installed.

Not sure what level it is.

The car is a year 2000 (S320 CDi). It refers to COMMAND DX all the way through the operating manual (it also talks some about COMMAND APS but I'm pretty sure its is not that), and it also talks about the system that re-routes you if there is a traffic warning from a radio station (is that called TMC?).

It does not, however, show the mercedes logo on start-up which is whi I think the software is an older release.

It is definitely a CD system, and the CD in it is a 1999 CD - NOT - DX. But my logic says that you can probably run a non-DX disc in a Dx system?

If I look up my car on the teleatlas shop it says it is a:
Mercedes S-Class
Command APS 2.5 system
VIN: ≥ A078551
(October 1999 to September 2003)

Now I'm even more confused. Maybe it is APS?

Does that help you to help me?

Thanks!

Robert

Your car will require a dx type cd. Discs are not interchangeable. Alfie can supply a new one at a good price if you contact him. Early dx discs circa 1999 had no dx markings on the disc from what i can remember. Don't download that file, i know people who have done and it screwed there system up. As stated above either take your car to mercedes or purchase the update cd to update the comand firmware. If you don't have the functions already as described on that download page you will need to update. Hope this helps.

Voltman - it does help, and...

... I contacted the Merc Dealer in Shrewsbury (I'm here often) to order the disc. They said it was a 'tools' part and they weren't allowed to order it for a customer. They also keep telling me that if I order the maps disc (the teleatlas disc) from them it has everything on it. They seem to think that the maps disc will do the upgrade. Is this true? Is there a merc version of the CD's that does firmware upgrades? Am I going mad?

No, map cd will not update the comand hardware, i tried that myself. This can only be done by a firmware cd. I did all this on my previous S320 so i know. Have you tried to purchase it from mercedes parts on line, somebody posted a link last week on here for it. Sold my disc when i sold the S320, got mine from a friendly mechanic. Good luck.

I have now found the MB parts site, here:
http://www.service-and-parts.net/dcagportal/DCAGPortal/workshopOrder.action
and the database lookup for the part number 220 589 00 22 00 here:
http://specialtoolbase.aftersales.daimlerchrysler.com/mpc/toolsframe2.php
and even the part after searching. All looks OK.

Then guess what - you have to register as a repair business and all that stuff - (complete with VAT number) to be able to place an order. Does anyone know a way around this one? Maybe someone is already a member who can order it for me? I'll gladly pay of course...

Robert

PS. I don't want to order a new nav disc till I've done the upgrade.

The map disk will not do the firmware update.

Hooray, Tony Purslow have agreed to get me the disc and upgrade it for free!

A result,

Robert

I too have been trying to get the firmware cd disk p/n 220 589 22 00 before updating my travelpilot map software, I have a S320 limo first reg April 1999 fitted with (I am led to believe) the TravelPilot Comand APS 2.5, did the firmware upgrade work for you Robert ? if so would it be the right one for my comand.... & could you help to get me the disk

thanks...

Didn't ever get the CD

Tony Purslow said they did the upgrade but when I got the car back it was no different - no Mercedes star on start-up or anything like that. I just gave up...

Robert

The 220 589 00 22 00 part is old (I think its before the MJ00 update!!) - the MY01 part (W230 589 00 22 00) is for Comand 2.0 and Comand 2.5

My 2003 S500 53 reg is widescreen but is cd not dvd, uses teleatlas dx discs. I think it changed to dvd based from september 2003 build onwards. Hope this helps.

How to tell if I need firmware update CD?

Hello,

I'm also a (confused) newbie to MB ownership. I recently bought a(n April) 2001 S320 CDI unfortunately without any satnav CD. I've never had satnav before buying this vehicle but would it be pretty safe to assume that I won't need any firmware update if I get the latest (Teleatlas DX) CD available? (I get the MB logo on Comand startup)

hi guys i purchased the disc your on about and updated it myself all the instructions are on the cover of the disc it was about £10 i can get you the part number but it is definatly a w230 at the start when you put in the update disc it will tell you what version of software you are running and i can confirm that it does give you the mb star on start up and automatically defaults to the map screen rather than have to do it manually couple of other features like blanking out letters not used when inputting addresses and an estimated arrival time takes about 45mins to update if you have any problems please contact me i may be able to help further and if you want the disc i can send it to you for the same price i paid if this helps you at all.
