Get the battery and alternator checked first, call the AA......

Check the battery terminals are solidly connected ( not loose ) .

Edit - I presume the gear selector is in either Park or Neutral - if not the inhibitor switch would prevent starting - or the switch could be faulty .

What condition is the battery in? They are less efficient at lower temperatures.

thanks for the replies.

just got back from a emergency trip up north, not been able to look , will do in the morning.

central locking wont work off the remote since it died.

yes its in park,

all the lights, radio, etc all work, dash shows "no malfunctions"
ignition comes on, nothing happens on key turn to start,

just to confirm, in the frost this morning, it unlocked ok, started then died,
restarted then died,
then am unable to lock/unlock it with the remote or the dash button for central locking, all i can hear is a noise where it is trying to lock, off of the interior button only.

£90 from euros for a new bosch battery, is that ok or do i need to goto MB ?

im probably gonna try my spare leisure battery on it to start it before i buy a new one.
can i ask if anyone notices that the airshocks/airmatic lights come on with the ignition, i never noticed it before, but bear in mind have only had the car a month !
thanks All

STOP
Don't use the leisure battery for this, you will kill it for sure.
The car battery is designed for high draw short period.

Leisure battery low draw long period.

Jump from another car or car battery.

thanks mate, what i call a leisure battery, i mean the spare battery for my previous 4wd.
is that ok ? cos its on charge atm

UPDATE :
the battery is fine, got it tested by 2 auto-sparks . Unfortunately i had to take the battery to them, i dont seem to be able to get anyone out for a week here in bournemouth.

bizarre additional,
after re-fitting the battery, the car did the same thing ! the remote didnt open the doors, but the car did start and died twice, then nothing.
ALSO: turning key to crank engine does nothing, and the ignition lights stay ON, they dont dim or anything.

any more suggestions ? still looking for a auto elec in bournemouth area

also read elsewhere, that a faulty keyfob or EIS "may" cause this problem , anyone know if this is true ?
I dont have a spare key to try yet....

thanks

hi ALC, seems like ur key need to be reprogram, if u said fob doesnt work, if u said car start and die after sec... thats ur problem "key". im work in honda dealer and have done same problems many many times " car towed in. crank no start or start and die" etc.. so i know it's Honda but, what if u try that, instead of spending ur time and money and just guessing where is the problam. if u already know ur battery ok, gas level ok, car in park,

yah looks like that what i have to do turk, thanks
downside in the UK is im told £250 for a new key and a week wait !
last resort, will get towed to a merc specialist, sadly i cant find a mobile one near me..

I will update with results as i go,

thanks all !

This is interesting.
My key batteries were changed on the parts counter at MB, after that the car would not start unless you pushed the 'open' button at the same time as turning the key.
More recently, the car has been having fun with us by starting but no wipers, indicators radio etc.
Came to a head the other day, my missus was in Sheffield, and it did the same. I told her to call in at MB Sheffield and they put a couple of new batteries in the key which cured almost everything, no faults since!!
Could be the key not talking to the receiver?
Worth a look.

About key u can get a key for $50 on ebay. First step check ur battery on ur key if its ok then u need to reprogram key. U can bay another key if u needed, but if ur key in good condition then u dont need a key.

Hi franey, in ur situation i would say turn ur battery on key fob 90 deg. It's a recall on some cars, u may laugh. But im serius, it may help.

How long does the car run for when it does actually start is it for a split second.

Do not get a key off ebay as these keys are already programmed and cannot be re-programmed to your car not even with a star machine.

The car really needs to be put on a star machine and check the actual values of the eis and key and see what is going on.

Its a shame your so far away otherwise i would of come and had a look for you

OK update : SORRY NOT SOONER - MY LIFE CURRENTLY SUCKS !

long story, ripped off by car dealer, refusing to pay repairs, blah blah.

£600 down, had to take to car to MB specialists in Poole , dorset, they think according to STAR that the EIS is faulty,

Willow , it starts for less than 2 seconds.

According to STAR software :

P1925
Drive authorization has been refused by control moule n15/5
(electronic selector lever module (ESM[EWM])).

Result hopefully by 23/12/2009

I Subscribed but arent getting instant replies as requested, any ideas plz :) ?

can an admin type person PLEASE change the title to

""W220 died , wont start ""

...........its not cod start related obviously, thanks
