W220 stolen in less than a week

Sorry to hear that. I hope everything gets resolved as quickly as possible.

Guys/gals the police just confirmed that the burnt car belongs to me, VIN number is an exact match that i have in all my documents.

I can see where your coming from Pontoneer, the car had every extra you could think of, all except the distronic cruise control. But i dont it was fuel related, the wife didnt give me money the night before to fill her up :-P

Got my Crime Reference number and list of things to submit to the insurance company, its all looking good for the claim to go through but hopefully nothing bad comes up. Although it might take a while to submit the V5 as i had just transferred my number plate on it, complicating things further. ARGH!

Will let you know about the claim decision, what went wrong (fingers crossed right)

Get it on retention immediately, otherwise you might lose it once the car is written off.

I wonder if the insurance Co will try to say it's not worth market value.

You should have a strong case as you only bought it a week before, so know the price they are.

Really? Once its declared written off the licence plate goes with it? My gosh had no idea. First thing on my list for tomorrow! Much appreciated chap! :thumb:

Yes, this is correct. Once the car is no longer, the 'permission to display' your private plate (that all it is, the DVLA don't actually let you 'own' the plate) ceases to exist as well.

If the plate has value, the DVLA might re-issue it and auction it (so you will have to re-buy it).

When you cease to be the owner, you cease to own the plate legally attached to the car.

First thing I did when I smashed up my CLK was to get the plate on retention....

Literally ..

Shude did exactly the same when he had a little "Surf and Turf" experience in his 202. You have to get the plate on retention or the ins co will nab it.

No, No, No...I don't want a hospital, I need a vehicle licensing office.

I drove what was left of it to a garage , dropped it off and walked up to the post office !

Hey guys and gals,

Bit of a thread revival but just an update, insurance came through and i now have me a new S Class, this time its a year older (2004) and long wheel based, the rear seats are electric :-P

Just some advice guys, protect your Mercs like they were your children, I'm real OCD now when it come to anything with the car, even getting the tyres changed other day, "excuse me sir, may i watch them fit the tyres to the car..." ha ha! Yes a little paranoid but what can i do he he!

Glad to hear the good news about the insurance company coughing up and rightly so.

How about your number plate?. Were you able to put it on retention while you were waiting for the insurance to get round to paying what was owed to you?.

Absolutely, was a tight one, but got it in the end. :thumb:

Do you also know that you can claim back any tax left on the car? Only found this out when my car was stolen and cherished plate was on there too. I had to write to dvla to give me the plate back which took a year as car was not found and had a refund of £98 for remaining tax.
