W221 2007 convert to xenon headlights

TBH I think it is poor of MB not to have xenon lights as standard on a 2007 S Class

I would say it is poor of the first owner if he/she did not tick xenons. For us Xenons were standard, at least for the LWB.

Hi Richard -

There seems to be so much mixed information regarding if its possible and what wiring is involved.

I did not look at the wiring but are you sure the mixed info is not about facelift headlights on a pre-facelift car versus just swapping pre-facelift parts.

Hi Richard -

There seems to be so much mixed information regarding if its possible and what wiring is involved.

We have what you have said and then we have some who have said the wiring is the exact same and you just plug it in and get it coded.

The CANbus is on a second connector. Maybee it is there on cars without Xenon and just not plugged in. If you don't put in the CANbus then the levelling will not work (and possibly cornering if it is active cornering) , but I suspect the lights will all come on as appropriate - just not level adjust etc (i.e not legal and not as designed)
- Theres plenty of people who put Xenon bulbs in cars without headlamp washers and without levelling added ....

I think i'm seeing a W221 this afternoon, so can see if it has the wiring there

Richard

Update. The pre MY10 "non Xenon" W221 has all the extra wiring needed for the pre MY10 Xenons with Cornering light functions - this includes the CANbus (2nd connector) and a few extra wires on the main connector. It may be that even non-xenon W221 uses the CANbus and does some sort of headlamp levelling too, but didn't have time to do research that bit as it doesn't really matter.

So, yes, headlamp swop, data-card update, various SCN coding and some flashing of firmware.

Pre facelift -> ILS conversion is significantly more difficult, i've done a couple and its loads of coding, additional wiring loom, new front SAM, etc etc.

Well I will tell you what richard - that is bloody interesting!

so it looks like get two genuine xenon headlamps then some coding.

Do you have more details on what coding is required? is it information that is easy to get and is it easy enough for anyone with star to do?

Is it something you do?

Hi

You have to be able to (a) update data cards at Mercedes and (b) SCN code things and (c) firmware update things

Yes, we're most of the way through the work on the original poster's car, so yes we can do it, although we don't have a headlamp alignment tool so that needs a MOT station

Make sure you get the headlamps from a RHD car if yours is RHD - and make sure you get the Xenon control units (attached to bottom of headlamps)

Richard

Right - cant do it- I cant live with the halogens.

I was out driving at night and it was like wearing drug dealer tinted glasses. Might as well have had a blind fold on.

I am just far to used to xenons.

Richard - can you PM me and let me know a price if I was to get the genuine xenon headlamps and for you to just code them up - I should be fine to fit them myself.

Thanks

Ps. I am literally 100's of miles away from you however I do pop down south every now and then so I at least I can keep you in mind when I do come down.
