I don't really know if I should post here, or the interior section?

I have the passenger air bag light 'off' on all the time on my 2006 S320CDI, and I had been told by the previous owner that it had been diagnosed as the passenger seat occupancy mat.

I was ordering some parts for the car today so thought I'd order the mat aswell and look at fitting it myself, or get an indie to fit it when they have the car for a check over - but according to the parts person, my car isn't fitted with one?

Does this sound normal, as I thought it was a fairly common problem? - and I don't like the idea of those emulator boxes that trick the car into thinking there is someone sitting on the seat all the time, as I don't want to give my insurance company any excuse to not pay out etc in the event of a crash, and obviously I'd like to know the passenger air bag will work if needed!

You should talk to another parts person, unfortunately the outcome might still be the same.

The point is, if I remember right, that the occupancy sensor is not available as a separate part but it comes with the seat cover. The parts guy must have concluded that there is no such sensor as he/she did not find it as a separate spare part.

Perhaps you should first check if the old one has just a broken wire or something else that can be fixed.

Thanks Diesel Benz - I did check the connectors/plugs to make sure they were clean and secured properly.

Is there instructions on here somewhere how to remove the mat or remove the seat cover? I thought I'd seen it on here before but can't find it anywhere - that way I could take it apart and look for myself

Occupancy sensor emulators are available on ebay from under £10.

He does not like emulators. Then again, if the seat occupancy sensor is properly version coded off (or disables with a well built emulator, not sure if any exists), the passenger air bag would deploy irrespectively if the seat is occupied (meaning additional repair costs in an accident with no front passenger).

Sorry, should have read properly and then explained...
There are emulators for either off or on, or selectable. They can be wired to a switch.
See ebay listings for more details.

I would have probably tried an emulator previously, but the reason I now have an S class is due to my E class being involved in an accident with the other driver being at fault and we had a traffic cop witness, but still the insurance company tried to get out of paying, and I had to threaten with court action just to get it resolved - so I don't want anything coming back to haunt me if this vehicle is ever in an accident, and I want to know 100% my passenger airbag will deploy if needed

Good to know. Insurance companies will try anything won't they!?
