can anybody help me - i have been told this was a known issue and wanted to hear from anyone on this forum if you have had the problem and how it was resolved. My car is a S320 CDI 2006. Thanks for any replies.

Not that I think it is the same problem (but you never know), I had a sloshing sound in an old Peugeot 406 estate.

My first thought was 'I don't remember hearing fuel sloshing around in the tank like that before'.

Following quite a lot of detective work, the sloshing noise seemed to be coming from right next to me. Acting on a hunch, and after thinking it through for a while, I drilled a small hole through the bottom of the sill, right at the back just in front of the rear wheel. About half a gallon of clean and clear rainwater gradually poured out.

Sloshing noise cured!

thanks for the feedback so far - some useful and some, well... ;-)

after speaking to a friend who worked for mercedes they said that this is a known issue but Merc will not admit to it being so and did not do a recall - they just replaced the whole system for those who complained within the warrantee period ... the problem is mine is just out of warrantee and it is a job that costs over £2K! and they are only willing to contribute a small amount towards the cost of the job.

Yes it is def the fuel tank that is the issue.
Many thanks

Could it be the baffles that have failed/come loose? I'm sure this is a known problem on another model (R230 SL I think?). If so, i'm sure I've read that although difficult, they can be wound up and removed through the filler hole

I have not heard of this problem before and i know a lot of people with 221's.

mate of mine has early sl500 R230 - he had to have his fuel tank replaced due to this issue - dont know if it was under warranty but it was a big job :(
