Wait for new reg or not?

Here is the litmus test - there are two identical cars on a dealer forecourt that you would be interested in buying. Both are of the same condition, specification, colour, trim, options, mileage and service history. Both have the same asking price except one is two weeks older than the other and is on a 14 plate while the other is two weeks younger and on a 64 plate.

1) which car would you be your first preference to buy from the dealer assuming the price is non-negotiable?

2) which car would you attempt to get a better price off the dealer?

Oh, in that case, yes...you're being an idiot.

Idiot for waiting for the 64 plate or idiot for getting it on the 14 plate????

That's probably not a good analogy. In my case:

- I need to wait an extra 2 weeks if I want the 64.
- there wouldn't be a discount on the 14 since that's the original delivery date. If anything the dealer will be doing me a favour by registering it in September and storing the car.

If you're talking about the person buying it in 3 years time, then yes I understand what you're saying. But the assumption is that those two cars would actually be next to each other, whereas the reality is my car would probably be compared more on the other factors than the plate. I do get what you're saying though. It would make a small difference to the resale value.

It's a leased car, so I'm baffled by the comments about future value.

It's very common for leasing companies to avoid registering cars in Feb and August - car dealers are always complaining about it, although perhaps if MB are providing the finance they're not so bothered.

I'd wait for the new reg - although I think the twice yearly change is bonkers because it "ages" cars very fast anyway. One advantage of the Sept change is that the year isn't so blatently obvious from '64' as it is from '14'.

I don't see a benefit of new reg's, you only look flashy for six months anyway. I just bought my 63 reg A-Class qith 12 miles on the clock, and it was cheaper because of it. It is still a brand new car and I am planning a private reg anyway!

My BIL leases a new large SUV (he swaps makes and models) every couple of years and he has a meaningless un-dated plate as he doesn't like making it obvious he has a new car!

Agree but you have done them a favour so you should get something. Free service etc.....

Or you can have the attitude that you don't always have to have a reward/motivation to do something for somebody.

No sweat for me to help them out and maybe in the future they'll return the favour, or maybe not.

cheers, Steve

So your car was cheaper because of it had a 63 Reg? I think you have just provided a reason why the OP should wait two weeks to get a later reg!

It depends how long you long intend to keep the car.

Yes, it's 1st September. However the dealers are able to get them registered so that they are ready for collection on 1st September.

Mine new car comes on Saturday - the number is irrelevant to me - personal plate or not. "New cars" are fun the first few times... eventually its just another new car.

I've had a number of cars registered on the new reg day...It's always fun, also added to because they were often recent released models as well.
Booking a ferry crossing just before setting off on August 2nd made the Girls day...She said...Oooh, my first P reg... By August 3rd, it had 1200 miles on the clock.
