WARNING TO CLS OWNERS!!! 8000 mile tyres!

After the flaming the OP got on here it is hardly suprising that he's made no further posts.

Not a great welcome to the forum for him, even if he hadn't checked his tread depths!

Indeed... if you are my age :D then you will remember that as teenagers we used to lift cars up and just move them to another parking place as a prank?

We came into the barracks a little bit merry one night and spied someone who had decided not to join in the merriments Mini. We picked it up and fitted it perfectly nose to tail between two concrete bollards at the edge of the parade square.:D

Needless to say the RSM wasn't to happy at a car invading his "holy ground" and we ended up doing sh*tty jobs for a week.:D AAH those were the days.:D:D

Quick update. Just replaced the tyres on my CLS320CDI airmatic at 13,000 miles. Wear was very even apart from the outer edges of the front tyres. Replaced the Pirelli P Zero Rosso with Michelins (Costco 20% off offer). Here's hoping I get better wear from the Michelins.

Michelin PS do have better grip than the Pirelli PZR, especially wet, but Falken do have a slightly better Treadwear Factor (qv) than the Michelin.

Check this number, it's on the side of the tyre, when making your choice.

I did wear out the rear Michelin PS rather quickly but the car was suffering from worn bushes, sorted now. They were changed prematurely around 12k due to puncture.

Me, I like tyres that stay glued to the road but have to compromise with economics. So far the Falkens have only slipped a little where the Pirelli would let-go, and the Michelin would have stuck.

I had the same problem years back in my 320CE W124, so much power but when you use all that power on a regular basis you need another set of boots on the back every 6 months.
The only way to increase tyre life is to adopt a new way of drivng, and accelerate gently, and have the knowledge you have that power on tap for the odd occation, should you really need it

Given that statement 8K miles sounds very low? something almost wrong?

I do agree though its your resposibility to check them regularly so should not really have come as a supprise when the garage phoned you. Also if you did this you probably could have saved a lot my shopping around for tyres.

Every week I wash our cars, I check the tyres, and screen wash etc.

To be honest the OP first post was rather hysterical, lots of exclamation marks, 'warning to all CLS owners etc.' When he gets a few plain answers he responds with more exclamation marks and talk of a previously owned 'much bigger and heavier BMW' which in truth is a about the same size and mass as a CLS with more HP but less torque. Perhaps better he didn't stay. I bet he's a great client for a garage

Sorry if this seems a bit judgemental on the OP but this sort of 'end of the world' stuff irritates me. What's wrong with just asking some sensible questions before launching into silly sweeping statements and general hysteria, warnings etc..?

I just had my tyres (all 4) replaced on my CLS. It's done 22,000 miles on them - Conti Sport 3, MO fitment. 245/40/18's. I do a lot of motorway mileage. All 4 tyres had about 2.5mm of tread left - I normally replace before the tread marker.

8k miles ? I would argue a very heavy right foot.

My CLS 320 got through some ContiSport IIs in around 10k and then Pilot Sport IIs lasted until I sold it with 25k on it.

I had the Brabus kit, but as mentioned that engine has serious torque!

I had the 275s on the rear.

Make sure you buy harder wearing tyres like Michelin or Conti, Pirellis will disintegrate.

To all of the latter.
I am not used to this Mercedes tyre phenomenon. The last car I owned was a BMW 745i. This car had a 4.4 V8, was a lot heavier and more powerful than the CLS and yet I got 25,000 miles from the rear Continental tyres. The cars previous to the 745i were a BMW 735i and a BMW 525i. All of which performed to between 22,000 and 25,000 on their tyres.

So you see it would not even occur to me to check the tread on the tyres at 8000 miles. My point is that 8000 miles was when the technician noticed them being bald. They may have been shot a lot earlier. This is a genuine problem. Not just a case of premature tyre wear."))

I just cant understand anyone, whether its their own vehicle or company vehicle not checking the basics before driving off (""So you see it would not even occur to me to check the tread on the tyres at 8000 miles"".), it's not a 10 min job to check the basics , they even get you to do it on the driving test , I can really believe the nice policeman letting you drive off with canvas tyres and wires sparking up the road because its not due a service for another 2k miles to go,maybe because its a car and not a bike what ya cant see cant hurt,do it on a bike and the lampost will tell you the tyres knackered  wipe someone out with bald tyres and your looking at jail time with dodgy showers:bannana:, powerfull cars eat money, often, if you want mega miles get a slug like my 220d, just changed my 2 with 7mm on, been on for 6 yrs and 36k miles, but on inspection AT POINT OF PURCHASE  the tyres were cracked in-between the treads and it had just been through the MOT for the sale.I'm just amazed :doh:

The Conti factory fit tyres don't last long. I got through a set on 18" rims fitted on a C220cdi in 11k miles. I changed to Bridgestone RE-050's and got circa 22k from them. I'm using Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's now and they are still going strong after 15k miles and are the best gripping tyres, especially the wet, that I've used.
