Recently bought the car....first Merc...Damp smell in the cabin...removed the carpets. Drivers side soaking....gutters seem to be clear. Any suggestions.

I would dry it best as poss then get the hosepipe out on the car whilst you are looking inside for the leak, water leaks are a right pain to find especially if they are slow ones and caused by capiliary action, has taken me ages in some cases to find them.

Over the last 10 years i have owned 5 landrovers four of them discos and every one leaked at least a couple of times from different places, favourites were sunroof seal, rooof rail seals, windscreens and bulkhead grommets, also door seals.

One had a water leak on the screen but the water came in the opposite side of the car.

Definately check the windscreen seal. The other place to look is the heater system, is it using any water? If so there may be a leak from the heater matrix behind the dash.

As EDZ says maybe heater matrix leaking, taste the water if it's horribly sweet then its gonna be the heater providing of course that you have coolant fitted.

Dont taste the water!! If its proper coolant, it will be poisonous!... Thats why you have to dispose it properly!

Most W124 I've seen leaking it was the heater core that had rotten.

Tasting the fluid is fine just dont swallow it and its only a tiny smear on your finger
Reminds me of a story years ago i saw one of our trucks parked up and noticed a stain on the front hub, stuck my finger in the liquid and was then going to taste it:eek: when the driver said LYNALL dont ive just had a pee up that wheel:doh:

Have you checked the central drains under the wiper arm? Also check the hoses that pass by the transmission tunnel at the front (mine were leaking) - there's a thread on here about it somewhere.

I get intermittent damp in the drivers footwell, its always a blocked drain.
