What engine oil would be in my Vito from the factory?

I would like to top up my Vito (3.0 V6 CDI) engine with the same oil that it already has in it.

But I can't find anything to even hint at what that might be!

The handbook and service book just give a range of grades, and refer to compliance with various M-B spec. sheets (presumably more than one maker has products that match them). There's no sticker in the engine bay, or anything else I can find to indicate what brand and type of oil is in there.

It's not had a service yet, so no invoices to go by.

Any ideas / suggestions?

MB use Mobil 1 oil IIRC. A MObil 1 oil that meets the viscosity specifications/grades will be fine.

Actually any synthetic oil that meets the grade will be okay

Try putting your car into this

Seeing that MB have a close relationship with Mobil I suspect it is a Mobil lubricant. I think it will be Mobil 1 ESP spec. (229.51) Low ash oil.

Thanks guys.

Interesting that the link above returns only 5W-30 oils, when the table in the handbook has the following (depending on temperature):

10W-30 / 40 / 50
15W-40 / 50
20W-40 / 50

Why can't they just tell you what is in there :(

I thought 5w-30 was a bit odd. Try putting in details for a 21 320cdi V6 as its essentially the same car. It will be more effective in winter but someone clever than me could answer what would be wrong with using 5w-40 or even 0w-40 oils.

229.51 spec seems what you are after so any oil that succeeds that.

Failing that, phone MB dealer and ask them what oil is suitable. 5w-40 is whats suitable for mine

Handbook refers to spec. sheets 228.51 and 229.31

I know all oils are meant to be fully compatible/mixable but I would like to keep to the M-B spec. if at all possible.

229.31 is a low ash semi synthetic. (most of the time)

229.51 is a low ash fully synthetic. (such as mobil 1 ESP)

Did you input your details? Viano is last on the list
Yes. That's just a heading ... you get an error if you click 'continue' with it selected. For all the others (above) there are models listed below each heading.

A purveyor of oil who was a frequent poster on this site (is he still allowed to post?) claim's that Fuchs are factory fill for Mercedes (here).

Indeed if you google "fuchs factory fill oil mercedes" you do get quite a decent number of hits indicating this. On the other hand google "mobil factory fill oil mercedes" and all the hits seem to refer to Mercedes AMG specifically and not Mercedes in general. Read into that what you like.

Just had mine serviced today (1 year old). Out went Mobil 1 0-40 and in went Castrol Edge 0-30.

Son No. 1 will be the lucky recipient of the 4 litres of Mobil 1 I've got left for top ups!
