What features would you like to see on W213 2016 E-Class

MY list of issues with the current car, which could easily be addressed (if MB UK could be bothered):
  • The absurd engine range available in the UK, which means that the only way to have a powerful engine is with diesel.
  • The stupid packaging selection by MB UK that means that, if you do want that large diesel engine, it must come in an "AMG" spec that removes all the comforts from the car and replaces them with boy-racer tat.
  • The absence of a tow bar on the E63 (might be one for GmBH).
  • Dubious exterior styling that is just too blingy.

Things to provide in the next generation:
  • Head-up display
  • Double-glazing throughout
  • 4-wheel drive
  • A choice of interior colours apart from coal-hole black, butterscotch and old-man grey.

(Note: Maybe some of these things have been fixed since I last looked at an E-Class brochure).

4Matic + 6cyl petrol engines...please!

Could not agree more - I have done away with the uncomfortable as sin "Sports seats" (I have a broad beam) through Nappa and Multi Contour seats. Not been able to "Un-bling" anything else yet!

The E-class really could do with a more powerful Diesel engine (and the option of 4wd). Audi and BMW seem to sell well enough.

I always thought it was a shame that Mercedes never found a way to fit the 4.0 V8 Cdi in the E-Class or S-Class in this country, then adding 4Matic would have been a real challenger to the Audi Quattro dominance.

I find the image in the sat nav screen is also in the wrong place.

It's hard to drive ahead whilst looking at a diagonally located image.

I think sat nav screens are dangerous distractions , especially since people tend to look at them on the approach to junctions , when they need their concentration on the road .

I have mine set to mute the screen when the vehicle is in motion ( one of the preferences in TomTom ) and rely instead on the spoken directions when driving .

Another pet hate of mine are the idiots who drive with the things right in the middle of the windscreen , usually on day mode full brightness after dark .

I would like:

  • A proper star on the bonnet and decent grille without a big star
  • No cheesy styling
  • No silly rear wheel arch 'haunches'
  • Round headlights - I don't want to drive something that looks like a Volvo
  • A decent Avant Garde version with sensible suspension and sensible wheels/tyres
  • An ultra smooth and economical 6 cylinder petrol engine
  • No big media/nav screen blocking up the console controls. If people must have this then give them an optional hud.
  • I don't need crappy manufacturer nav - just give me a nice wee shelf to mount my smartphone.
  • I'd like an inbuilt dashcam
  • I'd like a proper 'ignition' key that inserts in the steering column and I can turn switch the car on - none of these poxy start/stop buttons.
  • I'd like a proper spare wheel.
  • Discretely hidden exhaust
  • Springs that don't go bang after 50,000 miles on the first cold night of winter
  • An 2 year / 20,000 mile service intervals and an Assyst+++++ system that made sense.
  • Inbuilt ODB code reader
I want a car that when I tramp out of the airport and walk back to across the carpark to go home then I feel when I sit in it that I'm back home already. Or when I walk back to it in the evening after leaving a client meeting with a 100 mile journey through sh*tty weather and traffic that it's going to look after me on the way home.

(Maybe sounds like what I actually want is a car that will cuddle me )

^ some, if not all, of the above + a return of the clever double sun visor arrangement the 211 had. Why did they drop that idea on the 212?

Gear selector on the center console. Don't think I'll ever like the column change lever.

Yikes! They dropped that?

I can distinctly recall the moment I discovered that feature while stuck in a queue at the Broxden roundabout on the way to Dundee one morning when the sun was low.

It's always been something that struck me as remarkably simple and *considerate*. A little thing that made an MB a cut above.

Forgot about that one.

However I would also comment that I personally do like the foot operated parking brake - if they're going to stick with mechanical setup.

You're right. One of these days I'll get creative and come up with a substitute. It really, really was a good idea.

And the column lever isn't just the only quirk. The damn thing automatically goes into park when you open a door. Fine except you can't leave it in neutral and push it back and forth in the garage if reqd. Not without a lot of faffing about at any rate. They're getting way too safety conscious for me.

So it bloody well does....never knew that. Just had to try that on my drive.

Simple stuff........
  • Somewhere to store my glasses. If it holds two pairs that would be a bonus.
  • Gear selector in a sensible place (the middle).
  • Outside air temperature without skipping through displays
  • Door pockets big enough to take a can of pop
  • The option to turn off the blimmin' tailgate opener on the key fob.
  • A 12V socket in the glovebox.
  • Complete set of downloadable, customisable POI options for satnav. If I've got it on my 10 year old TomTom, it's not rocket science.
  • Mirrors that dip when you select reverse
  • Little plastic strap behind the sun visor to hold documents.
  • The end of silver, grey and black as colour options.
And most of all:
  • Get rid of the stupid foot parking brake. Don't care if it's electonic or old school in the middle.

Removal of aged Parktronic, ridiculous dash binnacle menu system and analog clock. It may be IWC but still not impressed.

Introduction of fully integrated audio, nav, climate, seat and car setup display and control unit. To include Real time traffic and on line software/Gracenote DB updates.

Surround camera setup as standard.

Bigger 20" wheels on E63 - my current 19" black alloys look insignificant (Audi RS6 had 20" wheels - looked purposeful)

Soft close doors

The Audi A6 has all of this, plus all the stuff I mentioned in my post. That's why I plumped for one instead of a new E Class.

I know! I moved from a RS6 V10 to the E63 and struggle with how poor the technology is in the Merc.

I thought the patent on heated front screens had expired. My mate's new Jag has one as standard.

Had that on a Granada some years ago... great feature.

Presumably Jag acquired the right to use the screens during the Ford ownership era?

Please no stupid stuck-on iPad-type display thing.

Going by recent spyshots, they appear to be opting for the same interior designs from the new S-Class, rather than the silly aftermarket looking tablet screens, so we might be in luck.

Removal of aged Parktronic

Is there anything better? I admit, the design of the idea is getting on a bit (my last 4 Mercedes have had the same), but as a function, I guess it works.
