I am trying to convert a file of a film to play on a dvd - what format should it be in? Keep getting back unable to read disc etc but it works ok on the iMac.

Should it be Mpeg 1 , 2 or 4? Or should it be something different? Spent half a day so far and no luck..

Am using iSkysoft iMedia Converter - thanks for anyone able to help.

Try this or search for a freeby on downloads.com

Thanks but that's for windows...I have the tools just not sure on the format as there are so many...Just want to know what format plays on a television via a dvd player. AVI doesn't.

Get Toast and make a DVD from there.

It will convert the file into AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders as required by your DVD player.

mpeg 2

download

SUPER

for windows... its freeware... geekY ( not the easiest interface )

An **** to download ( you have to go through screen after screen as its free...

BUT..its fantastic, it will convert anything to anything, even stripping audio out of things.

CLUE : iMAC

Oh forgot to add, don't pay £19 from apple for the mpeg 2 codec ( send me your email and ill send you it) :thumb:

Surely you only need Windoze for games or to be infected by the 'usual' unless purely for bespoke business applications then you would have the proper firewall and AV setups and not need an iMAC ?

Well I have it sorted (I think).. used iSkymovie Converter to change it to a .POV file and used toast titanium to burn it to a DVD. Now plays ok albeit not full screen.

Would it still play, and be better, if I convert the AVI file to mpeg2 and burn that to DVD?

You should be able to convert the AVI direct to DVD with Toast.

Full screen will depend on the aspect ratio of the original movie.

Another consideration, and something I use, is to get a Western Digital TV media unit. It will decode just about anything and offers an HDMI output too.

Pop your file on a USB stick (or an attached external HDD) and away you go.

The quality is better playing an AVI than decoding it onto DVD. It will also handle .mkv (bluray) files ;)
