E220 CDI with 17inch wheels and autobox (I blame these for my economy ) Motorway and town 43mpg
(These are this months after changing airfilter and putting some Wynns injector cleaner in - before this about 39.5mpg)
Back in the days before the EU test cycles came in one of the figures car makers loved to quote was fuel consumption at fixed speeds, 56 MPH (90KPH) and 75MPH (120KPH).
My Brother-in Law always felt that his MPG was way below the published figures and to "prove" this to his Dealer would drive as close to a constant 75 as he could manage on Motorways. Fair enough, but he would also drive at a constant 56 for long periods as well.
That may be Ok for a while, but this went on for two years until one day his long suffering wife simply refused to be driven from Cardiff to Glasgow at 56mph. Also let it be known that whilst he might engage in such nonsense when she drove the car on her own she had never, ever, as he had fondly imagined, obeyed his manic instructions about keeping records of fuel, average speed & road conditions and put down her best guess to shut him up.

E320 CDi Estate with Airmatic (which should aid economy, allegedly).
I average 36.5 on long motorway runs (according to the computer), with an average overall of 33.5 (most of my driving is an 8 mile commute to and from work, so that hits me hard).
Still, I am a bit disappointed on the 36.5 figure.

Drove to Paris and back last week, fully laden with the biggest roofbox on the market (Thule Atlantis 900), bikes hanging off the back, averaged 36 mpg, but didn't push it more than 70 mph because of the bikes.
Normally on a gentle-ish motorway run I expect just under 40.
I'm glad I'm far from being the only sad case here. My excuse is that it helps confirm the car is in rude health and also reminds me where I was and when - especially travelling abroad.
I've kept these fascinating rolleyes: ) records from day one and what is interesting is how economical cars have become:
1973 Renault 5TS - 31.5 mpg over 22k miles; 1996 E320 Coupe - 27.2 mpg, also over 22k miles.
C270 CDI Auto. Average between fill-ups is about 33.5 mpg.
On a 17 mile journey to work average about 35mpg.
Longer motorway runs about 36 to 39 mpg.
If driven hard about 30 to 32mpg.
However before my last tyre change I once recorded over 50mpg on a trip from Manchester to the Lakes !
The best I have done in my oil burner is 60mpg, but on average over many tankfuls it is just below 50. I blame the big wheels, which have cost me 3mpg, but we don't slow down so much for the corners now....
I average around 22 mpg.
Got to a shade under 30mpg at constant 70MPH on motorway.
As low as 14-16 mpg when having fun!(often)!
Still pretty good I think for a 5.5 litre V8.
Most people are quite surprised when I tell them the figures.
