Hi all
Just bought above - whats the best way to chip it for better performance/economy? The Brabus chip? Or is there a more cost effective option??

Also - I'd like some AMG wheels - do you reckon I can get some cheap on eBay - are there frequently around or is it a dealer only item?

Any help appreciated!

Welcome to the forums.

The 'best' way is the way that gives the kind of results you want. Better acceleration? Better economy? More low end torque? More top speed? Reversible or permanent? Portable or stays with the car?

Use the Search function on the forum toolbar (underneath 'Welcome BQF') and type in 'chip'. You'll get loads of information.

Why not? Please can you elaborate the reasons? :dk:

Yes.

A tuning box does nothing more than to trick the ECU into overfuelling. This will generate more power, but poor running of the engine, excess smoke, and increased injector wear.

From what I understand a remap is a more advanced method of tuning that alters other parameters in the car, not just the fueling.

Oh, OK. I must have been reading your reply wrong as I had misunderstood you. Though you were hating on remapping. No worries.

Thanks sorrel - great website that. The 18" 10x twin spoke are what I am after - didn't realise they weren't AMG!

Great website find that - thanks muchly.

I own an e270 cdi with a remap AND tuning box,use it as a taxi(weekends).Wouldnt go back to a standard car, totally transformed the car in terms of smoothness and drivability. No reliability issues so far concerning map/box.Bought the car nov 07 with 102,000 on it (now 140,000).One happy MB owner:)
Bought a set of 18 amg VI replicas+tyres For £570.

Hi,

Your using a map and a tuning box at the same time??

Yes,tuning box on top of the map.Put on Dyno yesterday, map alone gives 202.6 bhp and 316 lb ft(flywheel).Couldnt get a clean reading with box added, however, they estimated around 230-235Bhp.

I had a kleemann KD box and I was told by west-tuning that it's dangrous to fit the KD box alongside the remap?

All i can say is that the car runs much better using both,i dont really use the power at all, what i notice is earlier+smoother gearchanges, less throttle, more mpg, quieter engine, safer overtaking etc.The amount of passengers who have commented on how smooth the car runs for such a big mileage amazes me.The guys that did the dyno run(they also do remaps)for the car made no issues of running map and box, they agreed that it runs even better with the box on.Did they explain why its dangerous?

This is spot on advice NEVER run a remap and a tuning box, the remap has already advanced and maxed the fuelling, fitting a box with a remap takes it beyond its safe levels. I guarantee the engine will go bang at some stage Its good work for us doing engine rebuilds after people thought they could screw even more power out of a remap by fitting a tuning box, VW idiots seem pretty prone to doing this.

On the remap Vs tuning box depends on what you want?

The more expensive boxes are just like a second ECU and not just a fuel rail pressure trick, remaps are good but there are a lot of cowboys out there.

We can take the 270 cdi engine from 177 bhp to 215 bhp and increase the torque from 400nM to 500nM by either box or remap. If you want something you can take off and cant be detected at service or warranty work time then the box is the best way to go, if you are not bothered then a remap is probably easier.

Our box is from a reputable manufacturer and equal to Brabus & Kleeman boxes in terms of power but more sophisticated electronically.

How do these boxes work? Do you simply plug it in somewhere and it bypasses your ECU?

I'm thinking about one for my Saab...and Hirsch is £800!! Way too much, BUT, they have a good repoutation..

Wise words mate!;)
I would just add that the later the engine is the most difficult it is to see big gains with the addition of an add-on box.
The 220 and 270 CDI from about 5 years ago respond very well to most fuel pressure rise boxes and are normally problem free.
The latest engines are much closer to optimum fueling and my experience is that is better to stick to high end (Brabus) tuning boxes or a good re-map to avoid any unintended consequencies.;)
