When do you change from winter to summer tyres?

Out of interest, when do forum members generally take off their winter tyres/wheels?

I believe most people use winter tyres from November to March, but would be interested to know people's practices. Particularly as it feels so much warmer recently!

December to Feb, UK winter is kinda short and not that severe.

Still got winters on now, nice smell of burning rubber sometimes :D

My first year on winter tyres but I expect to switch to summer tyres end of March. There is still plenty of time for sub 7c temperatures!

Where do you live? That must be a factor in your decision.

7 deg under put winter tyres on
7 deg above put on summer

as a rule of thumb

But you could be changing every other week Trevor. I suspect the best thing is when the weather is warmer and probably unlikely to get too cold again. So March sometime.

Was 4C in Glasgow at lunchtime today.

I was on my bike. No need for winter tyres ;)

We had 12c today and warmer tomorrow :) Monday forecast to be frosty and remaining cold ...

I live in West London. So fairly warm weather in general compared to many areas.

Although I'm extremely pleased with my first season with winter wheels and tyres - to be honest I think they only came into their own on 2 days this year.

For various reasons we didnt get around to fitting my wife's car with winter tyres this year, and she has been fine. Although it's a very different type of car.

I understand that my experience has been very different to most other parts of the country - and that entirely reflects my location.

I am aware of the 7 degree threshold. Just posted the question to see what people actually do in practice.

Thanks, Matthew

You live in west London and the bad weather (snow) in not likely to effect the southern area of the UK for as long as other areas (Theoretically). If you change tyres in mid march it should be OK. You now have 2 sets of tyres and they will last twice as long as owning one set of summers (tyres are tyres) and even though you have only used for 2 days they might have been lifesavers or at least got you where you wanted to go on the bad days. Well done for the sensible choice of winters (Once you've bought the first set it does not cost much or any more than one set). Better to be safe than sorry.

i was planning on changing in march or when temperatures are consistently above 7

Thats what I do, but only after checking the long range weather forecast first, just to be sure.

First year with winters, I did not have to fit them until the first week in January and they were off first week in march.
Last year they had to go on the first week in december and stayed on until the end of march.
This year the snow started in November, but mine were already on due to the weather forecast and that will dictate when they come off this year too.

As you can see, every year is different, an accurate weather forecast of the coming temperatures is what you need.

A recent article I read somewhere about weather said that we can expect another cold snap February/ March time. I'm figuring on changing back around the end of March - should be fairly safe then.

+1. I only got mine after the snow this year due to lack of stock :(. I'll be leaving them on until mid to end of March because I tend to drive very early mornings and late evenings, not so much during the day when it is warmer.
