hi

I plan to declare my SL SORN over the winter months.

I'm thinking i will do it tonight - but do you reckon it may be worth holding out until end of October?

its not been a nice day round here for a few weeks now, and even if its not raining, its cold.

Forecast is for quite a mild winter and if the last few winters are anything to go by it probably will be. However this will not prevent local authorities/ Bear Scotland from starting to spread huge amounts of road salt on our highways with concomitant effects on our cars.(not that I am against that in principle I should make clear) They make extensive use of temperature weather forecasts to trigger this action so maybe that's a clue when you begin to see the dreaded "white film" on the car bodywork. The onset of "winter"will obviously be different depending where you are in the UK of course.;)

Maybe leaving it until end of October is the way to go. we did have a really nice week of weather about 3 weeks ago so there is hope yet; unfortunatly my radiator gave up the ghost during this good weather so i didnt get to use the SL as much. Thats all fixed now but car hasnt moved since!

The main thing i want to avoid is the salt..... wife told me why dont i put the hard top on and use it during winter - the only reason i wouldnt is because of the salt issue.

as soon as i see a hint of a salt truck it wont be coming out!

The car is taxed until end of Dec because i got 6 months tax on it when i put it back on the road after all the work was finished. next year i'll either tax for 1 year and claim back the rest or i'll tax it 6 months same as Jay, but you can get some nice days in April. I guess now you can tax online i can just tax it the morning i plan to drive it if it looks like an exceptional good week ahead.

maybe its time to get those goggles and leather flying helmet!

My grandfather had an XK 150S drophead, and I was provided with a leather flying helmet and goggles when I rode in the back. As an ex-racing driver he drove fairly 'enthusiastically' on the road!

Not sure how he got the registration! The car was kept in concours condition and ended up in the Heritage Motor museum at Gaydon.

Looks like it's still around:

The vehicle details for S 150 are:

Date of Liability 01 12 2009
Date of First Registration 12 08 1959
Year of Manufacture 1959
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3442CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour GREY

you need to move South! September was very very dry; quite often like this and October can be good - usually better than March. Not much chance of a salt truck in October even in Edinburgh.

I'm a firm believer of not taking cars off the road for winter, unless it's for rebuilding purposes. Just make sure it's prepared for winter! And clean it all the time!

Some of the best driving weather is in the winter months IMO.

Totally agree! I have had three convertibles in the past, and some of the best roof down driving has been in the depths of winter! Just get it jet washed underneath afterwards.

Yeah, even Fiats can survive a Scottish winter...! Just rinse carefully after every run. ACF 50 is wonderful stuff, used by winter bikers, but works on cars too!
