When was your Merc built

hmmm

I can only conclude that the database is wrong, or is pulling up the wrong result for my VIN. My car is 3 years younger than it is and is listed as a a E250 2002 (did they actually make a E250 for UK?) instead of a E240

OR..

my car is a ringer,

OR

the dealer has given me a service booklet which doesn't correspond to the vehicle (as I haven't actually checked).

I suspect it's the first conclusion :D

Tried 2 of my cars, and they both came up a 2002.

You can also get a good idea of the date by pulling your car apart.

Nearly all parts have a date on them, which tells you the car is at least that old

I used the below mentioned website, tapped in my VIN number, compared to the vehicle log/ registration book the site comes up with later production date, showing me that my merc is newer than when it was first registered
It's impossible to tell the year of manufacture from just the numbers in a European VIN. If the website interrogated the MB database it could find that information, but I don't think it does that.

Absolutely. In fact you don't even need to take anything - have a look under the seat or under the bonnet and you will find lots of little white labels with build dates on them. Mine are spread across 27 28 29 30 June for a car registered 1 August.

I am also pretty sure that the site you link to is specifically geared to customers in the USA, having said that it's still pretty good, all the details are correct for my car except the manufacture date, impressive when you consider that the W202 C240 was never sold in the States.
