Which tyre for my new wheels

Right, do we all agree that Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 are the boys to go for.

F1's £88.30 each, Uniroyal rainsport £90.70 each, TOYO Proxes T1-S £83.30.
Not a lot in price difference, money does not even come into the equation, safety first, I have ran Goodyear tyres on my Fiat Scudo van for the last 4 years and have been pleased with them compared with other cheap tyres I have had on previous vans, cheap is dangerous !

I called in to my local wheel specialist today to order wheels and tyres, we had a difference of opinion on tyres so I did not order, now getting very frustrated. Basically he told me that F1's are crap, that is why he does not sell them, he sells mainly TOYO and Yoshi, he was telling me how he is an expert on TOYOS and that they art the best thing ever but did not beleive me when I told him that a new model of TOYO was launched last week but agreed that TOYO were noisy, so I am getting really, really cheesed off now, I have seeked advice from tyre specialists and they all seem to only rate and endorse the products that they have there. I refuse to be conned or to be parted from my hard earned until I am satisfied that the right choice is available.

Is it that hard to find a tyre that grips safely in the wet and dry and is quite on tarmac, surely not, or is it just because I am intending on changing from 15" to 17" so less rubber between the rim and outer edge of the tyre the noiser it gets and less choice you have.
Incidentally what tyres do Mercedes use as OE and are they any good.

I got 17" Michelin Pilot Sports. Great in the dry or wet, but expensive to replace. Not too noisy and tread life not bad (I've only had them for 9000 miles though). I think mers mainly have Michelins, Continentals and .... I think Goodyears?? or Dunlops??

What "wheel specialist" did you go to Andy?

Hi Pluggers, I went to Hot Hatch Corner in Longton as they are mentioned on the TOYO web site, no too impressed, he was more interested in telling his 2 mates about his new plasma screen TV.

How about Bridgestones? I am on my second set of Potenza RE720's, very good tyre with rim protector, good looking tread and sidewall, the wear is very good and I have found the grip to be excellent both in the wet and dry. It is a good compromise between an all out sports tyre and a quiet, comfortable touring tyre at a very good price.

Lets face it, whats the point in putting F1's on anything other than a very fast sports car, no offence but I doubt that a C180 will ever realise the potential of a very sporty tyre.

I agree Jimmy and respect the input of someone in the motor trade with an unbiased opinion, the C180 will never set the world on fire but I really like the car and have no intention of changing it all I want to do is to loose the 15" elegance wheels and just require a "safe" tyre not some lethal piece of rubbish. Talk about fast cars, guess who was lucky enough to drive a 2 month old SL55 AMG recently ? cant guess, ME !

F1s are certainly not crap - whatever they tell you !! Maybe they just get Toyos at good prices ?! I'm not saying that F1s are necessarily the 'best' either - like Jimmy says - it depends on the application, or the most expensive - (you can pay much much more - Michelins, for example) - but I'm quite happy with mine so far, and can't say I know anybody who isn't !

(I'll now be proved wrong, no doubt !!)

Yep, know who you mean! He's not that bad for deals on wheels & tyres combo's,Ive bought some myself off him and had no problems with the tyres that were supplied,You can even knock him down abit by saying you can get cheaper at "George lowes" now called "cats and carbs" Who are now located near the creda building in Meir. You could try "Hot Lane tyres" in Burslem he does some good deals on tyres now and again! They come recomended.

We put P-Zero Rossos on our C43 and have been much impressed. Grip is better than the previous (original fitment) Continental Sport-Contacts and the steering feel is much better - giving more confidence in my opinion. Also, they are quiet and comfortable. Miracle tyres? Well Autocar bought them for their own M5....

Pirelli website has a good tyre specifier on it.

Right we are down to the last threee contenders ( better than Pop Idol this ) the latest offerings from Style Alloys are :

17" A-line wheels fitted with 225/45/17 Bridgestone Potenza tyres = £860

17" A-line wheels fitted with 225/45/17 ToyoProxes T1-S tyres = £820

17" A-line wheels fitted with 225/45/17 Goddyear Eagle F1 GSD3 tyres = £820

Decision time, not much in the price, which tyre represents the best value and is quite on the road and good in the dry and wet.

Any one heard of rochford tyres at www.rochfordtyres.co.uk they are selling 17" DTM wheels with Goodyear F1's for £680 ! Are the DTM any better or worse than the A Line does any one know and are Rochford a reputable company, a big difference of £140 between DTM and A Line, enough to buy the wife something nice........ or some more goodies for the Merc.

I have ordered a set of DTM (AMG style) wheels from rochfordtyres.co.uk, 4 x 17" wheels, 225/45/17 Goodyear F1's, wheel nuts, centre badges, locking nuts, postage, all for £695 ! Will post pictures when fitted, I have owned my car for exactly 12 months now so I have told the wife its a birthday present for the car.
