Thanks

All I have listed is a "3com Intergrated Fast Ethernet Controller"

There is no wireless adapter listed in device manager

Do you have any unknown devices in Device Manager - with a yellow triange containing a "!" ?

If so, please grab the screen (Alt-Prt Sc) and paste into your reply.

Thanks.

Best to check in the BOIS(press F2 during startup) as if it is disabled here, it may not show up in XP.
I think your machine should have built in wireless though, otherwise, yes, a USB or Type 2 PC Card will give you wireless capability.

Hi,

go to the below web page on Dell's support site, stick in your tag number from the laptop and click on the "original configuration" tab, this should tell you what was in the laptop when it was built...

Dell System Information / Dell Warranty Extensions & Upgrades / Dell Warranty Status

Cheers,
Eddie.

As suggested try the link above. You may find that your laptop can support an integrated wireless card although it may not be factory installed. You'll probably find that the antenna is pre-wired but the card slot is empty. I can't remember the exact model number of my Dad's laptop but I did something similar for my Dad on his Dell laptop.

We bought something like this: Dell Latitude D510 Wireless MiniPCI Card

Although we got it from ebay for less than £10 and it was a DELL branded intel PCI-E wireless network card!

I'll be seeing my Dad over the weekend, so I can check what model his Dell Laptop is and what model of card it was we went for.

He was all set to buy a replacement PCMCIA card / USB dongle as you were when I suggested we should be able to install an internal card...

He's really pleased that it's all integrated now after using a PCMCIA wireless card for about 3 years!..

Thanks for all your replies.....I have gone and got myself a USB adapter and it works fine...can now get wifi on my, rather aging, laptop!!

I though that Wi-fi was in-built on this model.

We've been through that.....can't find a trace of wifi on the computer, hence I have gone for a USB adapter..
