Thought the laptop seemed a bit slow online but nothing silly then tonight I was having real problems trying to connect. Reset router. Off on etc then it would connect. Then after accessing a couple of pages it would freeze.

I assumed it to be the router at fault. When connected via the ethernet lead all is good.

My desktop computer connects throught the Netgear USB adaptor and a mates laptop connects without any problems via in built wifi.

I have been using the current laptop and router for almost 12 months problem free and no settings have been changed.

I have installed the usb adaptor on the laptop and that also works.

My thoughts are that it is now clearly the laptop at fault.
The confusing bit it that the computer will not bring my router up in the list of available networks but it will bring up the neighbours. :?

On the bright side I haven't quite had the computer for a year. Got 1 month to go :D

Unless anyone can think of something for me to try???

Thanks.

It wouldn't be the first failed wifi card in a laptop I'd seen. Does it work if you force the router and card to use 802.11b only?

Replacement cards are available easily on ebay, but as you're in warranty I'd speak to the laptop supplier first.

If it s seeing your neighbours wireless router, then your wireless adapter in your laptop must be working. Are you sure you haven't inadvertantly turned off your wireless output on your router?

The makes me think that you may have your network set up not to broadcast SSIDs; you might want to check that.

A second thing to check would be to open your cards properties (Control Panel> Connection settings>"wifi card">properties if my memory serves me - my windows laptop died the other day and I haven't had time to look at it). Usually there are only 3 things checked, TCP/IP... and 2 more (hopefully someone can fill you in on this). Also check that your network is not blacklisted and is in your favorite networks list. Finally, if in connection settings you right click on the wifi card and select "Fix Connection" (or something on those lines) it resets quite a few things and usually resolves a few problems.

Now if you're on a mac - its a whole different story :p OsX isn't too keen on secure networks, and you might need to manually type in the network name to connect too and the wep/wpa key. Tons of other wifi related issues exist; but I think you're on a windows box ;)

Also consider that your neighbours wifi might be sharing the same channel as yours and is causing interference.

Consider changing channel numbers on your router to see if the problem disappears.

power spikes can affect the netgear boxes - mine was replaced under warrenty

Wire yourself to the router with your mates laptop go into the router admin and then change the channels, I had to do that recently as my mac was getting really bad speeds, cordless phones, microwaves etc all affect signal strenght but changing channels helps considerably.

homeplug stuff is cheaper here http://www.solwise.co.uk - I regularly use it to cover large houses with wifi - run homeplug from the router (router of choice is billion 7402R2M) then homeplug to wireless adapters as required giving wifi across the house - needed three in some larger houses...

Also done WDS for some places but it's not as easy (or fast)
