Will this cause a knock on effect?

We've been selling hundreds of laptops (possibly thousands) each year, mostly Hp, Lenovo and Apple, been selling them for 20 years now, and never had a reported incident of a laptop catching fire. We also maintain the laptops, and only replace batteries with genuine ones, perhaps that helps as well. I guess it does have to do with quality (in spite of the Samsung Galaxy battery issue a few years ago).

That is heartbreaking and one of my biggest fears, can’t begin to imagine what those poor dogs must have gone through. :(

It was awful. He wasn't out for long and the house wasn't that badly damaged ... it was the smoke that killed them.

What would make them unacceptable?
They're here, and barring superior innovation they're here to stay.

My thinking was that if the ship fire caused a greater perception of the risk they present, would that have impact on the transportation of them. So far the thinking here is that they present less of a risk than a petrol mo mo.

It's still early days for these things. More incidents will likely cause more controls.

As said, I think it's easier to fit to cargo vessels means of fighting ICE car fires, than EV fires. Possibly something will be devised and it will obviously increase the shipping costs.

Blimey. :(

Do you know if the Macbook was being charged when it caught fire or not? Poor dogs.

On the same note... can someone explain why electric batteries in e-bikes and e-scooters keep exploding? It's not like the Chinese are using some new cutting edge tech in these batteries. In essence they are no different than batteries in rechargeable power tools, rechargeable vacuum cleaners, and even laptops and mobile phone - so why are the e-bike/e-scooters prone to exploding, while other rechargeable batteries, are not?

Is it not something to do with them being Li-po and less explosive ones being Li-on ? I'm sure someone will be along to explain .......

Ditto that. We never ever go out leaving the tumble on whilst the dogs are home alone.

Had many a 20 mile return home U turn , check the straighteners mission. Grrrrrrrrrr

Geeze, I v often leave my laptop plugged in, phones sit for hours charging and unmonitored, then there is the mains fire alarm with back up cell (so continually on charge). Called the fire angel it could live up to its name (tbh I ditched many of those years ago, they were a nuisance). As for the wife's rechargeable personal electric toothbrush that I've never seen, I think we will just have to live the risk of that over heating.

Mrs Spiky has a genuine fear of leaving straighteners in the house if she has used them before we go out. Hence the straighteners more often than not come out with us.
The possibility of them burning the car to the ground seems less of a worry to her.

So now it turns out that no one has any idea how the boat fire started.....just made up by the press from random snippets of unsubstantiated info. What a surprise....says nobody at all!!!

Regardless of where the fire started, as they found out when the last car carrying ship, the Felicity Ace went on fire and later sank, when one of these EV's catches fire you need specialised equipment to fight the fire and ships are not equipped with it so all you can do is try to contain the fire which usually does not work. No one can say for sure where the fire started in this latest fire as they still cannot get on board the ship to even start looking, again due to the nature of an EV going on fire.

Nothing like a bit of anti-EV propaganda…

Imagine that 100 years ago, the electric vehicle won out and everything was electric.

Move forward 100 years and theres a new fangled technology that offers certain advantages in terms of energy density and possibly refuelling times (electric may have moved on in those 100 years though) but there were some downsides in terms of complexity (too many moving parts), efficiency (lots of wasted energy), and potential explosiveness, both in terms of driving around in a big bomb, and the centralised storage facilities (because you couldn't fill it at home overnight). Not to mention it could leak all over the floor and spread the fire further. Oh, and it would put out a load of weird chemicals into the atmosphere, who's effect is currently unknown and would probably be insignificant. :)

I can see the same sort of arguments being used. Actually, having just read it back, I suspect it would be a non starter (like my SL)
I guess people don't like change. I know what I like and and I like what I know.

I'm not advocating anything. Just pointing it out. Current electric has downsides as well

Sorry that I have come late to this . To answer your question . The vast majority of power tools /laptop/phone suppliers are from brands we know and 'trust' . They have a duty of care to their shareholders not to be known as a company brand that routinely burns down houses and kills people.

The E scooter/Bike manufacturers are by and large a name none of us of heard of and they can chop and change their Chinese names at the drop of a hat .

Milwalkee , DeWalt , Apple, Samsung , LeNovo (Chinese) , Dell , HP, and even Ryobi do not have that option , despite the fact that their batteries are probably built in the same factories of the unknown brands.

I love how this thread will soon be pages long AND there’s still no evidence the ship fire had anything to do with an EV to begin with. 😂
No one of sane mind is suggesting the fire was caused by an EV . The discussion is about once an EV starts burning (no matter how it started burning) is how bloody difficult , almost impossible it is to extinguish the flame.

Shouldn't you simply embrace your curly locks, and be done with it PMP ?
