I'd like to have some subtle tints on my CLK convertible but I'm not sure if tinted windows suit silver cars. When chosen as an option from new they look great but I've seen so many terrible aftermarket efforts. I'd be interested to know your thoughts...or if anyone has any photos even better!

Minefield.

I have in the past had several cars legally tinted. In most cases the tinting has scratched with the smallest amount of dirt being trapped in the window rubbers. Or. The tint has bubbled like Mr Blobby. It can lead to accusations of Barry Boy styling and Chav-mobile looks.

Factory fit glass is good and has none of the issues suffered by tints.

Did you see the guy in London last week who was accused of killing a cyclist by opening his door, knock the poor chap under a bus?

His window tints were found to be allowing only 17% light in. Holy Moly..

Had two mercs in silver, tinted looked great
Never had problems with bubbles or scratches
Make sure "tinters" know what hey are doing-rear window heating, carefull with that, etc

as long as its a light smoke you should be fine, still not legal but subtle enougth to look good without drawing too much attention. visabilty should be fine.

I have had two silver cars both tinted at pentagon, this one for the last 3 years and the other for 9 years without issue.

Something you should also consider when choosing the level of tint is reversing at night in poorly lit areas, or even well lit areas, especially when it's raining. Yes, you can see through the door mirrors, but obviously you can't see the full picture of what is behind you through those.

I have factory tints on mine and I'm sure if they were any more intense I wouldn't be able to see what is behind me properly.

Difficult to see from this picture, but if you look at the back side window it gives a good idea of the overall effect, all the back windows are the same level of tint. My advise would be don't go too dark. Maybe Smoke or Midnight.

Two more pics, one from inside the car and one from outside of the same view. Both taken at 3:30 PM today, daylight just starting to fade.

View through the rearview mirror.....

Same view from outside the car.....

Another thumbs up to pentagon. Had mine on for four years before selling on and it was as good as the day it was put on. Saying that this was over five years ago so dont know what the quality is like nowadays.
Mine was lightly smoked all round and i never had a problem seeing at night.

80% Tint, got a deal (£160) via my mate who works at a local BMW showroom, they send all their cars there that require it as an aftermarket extra.

I've always thought about getting my rear windows tinted but don't like the thought of the car being taken apart to do it

I'm also worried about scratches appearing in the tint.

I've always gone 50% on the backs and 35% on the front doors. 35% isn't enough to hamper visibility, attract attention from the Police or cause any frowns at MOT time but the difference it makes to glare and UV on your skin is huge. 50% on the back is dark enough for privacy without looking like a drug dealer/boy racer etc etc. and is about how dark OEM privacy glass is.

Just make sure whatever you go with is the quality film with metal particles in it and not the crap that's just dyed.
