Ok lads,

I recently contacted Mercedes in Hull about a C63 in Opal Red, price £32,998. I wanted to put my current car a 09 Vectra VXR with FSH in part Ex, with the rest being cash.

I then received my quotation.

C63 :32,998
Road Tax: 505
12 Month Extended Warranty: 2600
SupGuard:466

And 1500 off for my car.

So total to pay £35,069

Am I missing the point here, so i give them my car although I know it's not worth much, but give them my car and add £2000 to the price....... WTF

Red C63 - nice.

The warranty and Supaguard are your choice entirely - take them out of the deal and reduce the price accordingly.

Sounds like a cheeky salesman loading the deal.

??? I don't get this.
But you just listed those extras - ie Extended warranty and Supagard.
Those adds to the price.

Plus you can't factor road tax in the price of car. U get charged that whichever new/used car you buy.

So i am not sure what point you are missing. :dk::dk:

They did that with me also , the price increased by around £1500 by the time they added all their extras - paint guard / tyre insurance etc.

Tell them you want the base price with your px and everything else is up for negotiation.

I found their px price was fair compared to some of the quotes i was getting.

If its an approved used wouldn't it have a 12 month warranty or is the quote for an extra year?

SupaGard is a great way for the dealer to increase their profit margin. I'm not saying it's worthless, but it's certainly not worth £466 - more like one-tenth of that.

I take it that the 12 month extended warranty is to provide a second year's cover over and above the 12 months already provided with an Approved Used car? If so then it's an optional extra and an expensive one at that.

Take those out of the offer and you'll be paying just the sticker price of the car plus the VED, less the £1500 for your trade-in. Does that make more sense?

I'm aware of road tax and the extras etc, just had a chuckle at the total cash price being higher than advertised price.

Seems to be their standard way of doing it. I got the same when I enquired wit a main dealer about an E class convertible. Their quote with trade in ended up to be more than the window price due to loading all the crap they want to sell on top.

I'm so glad I bought mine last year when they were doing 2 years extended warranty for free

You could get a new on on PCP then change it after 3 years for another new one, I know you will never own it but you get a new car every 3 years for less than £300 p/m

I sold my 55 plate vec vxr cheap to a mate two years ago for a lot more than that mate!

Get rid of the other stuff and if you're not already stocked up and into your cleaning products then i'd advise a website like cleanyourcar.co.uk and spend £50-£100 on good quality shampoo and wax along with polishing cloths and a cleaning mitt then spend an afternoon cleaning and waxing yourself whilst still in the "honeymoon period" and you'll have saved £400, just top up the wax coat ever 3-4months.

I've also heard of guys paying the money and not even getting the supaguard, little imp car cleaners just pocket it for themselves.

I wouldn't sweat about the warranty either.

oh, and welcome to the forum! ;)

When buying my choice of secondhand cars I have told and done some questionable things to obtain the best deal.
First of all you the customer is king and always in charge, I always go in first with a pretty outrageous offer then see what the reaction is as you always have the option to walk, it also depends on timing too I have found if you are lucky to strike at near the end of the sales quarter after a slow time that can work well for your negotiations.
Always be polite when offering a near insulting offer, at times I have had looks from a salesperson from a 'care in the community type smile' to outrage but have never been shown the door yet.
I always set in my mind the best possible deal for me and see what happens.

The last three used cars I bought were used approved BMWs and I always start the sale with "to do a deal it must have 2 years warranty" and I always got it thrown in on top of a discount. But Merc dealers don't operate that way. No haggling, that's the price. Lost them my business so far. Whether it's an illusion I like to feel that we worked out a good deal.

Crikey I didn't realise the extra warranty was that much. Seems very high, I only paid about £1100 for the extra years warranty on my R8. I got two years when I bought my C63 last year and also negotiated about a grand off the list price plus a about a grands worth of new windscreen and repairs that I wanted done. Never take a dealers first offer. It is also sometimes better to take finance to get whatever special offer they offering then pay it off.

Arn't there deposits as well? and a C63 for £300 a month?

I've found that it's very dependent upon the dealer / franchise. One of my local dealers is part of the Inchcape group and their attitude to negotiation on a used sale is very much "our price is fixed (and at the top end of what's reasonable) and our valuation on your car is fixed (very much at the bottom end of what's reasonable), take it or leave it". So I leave it :p However, others I've dealt with (Mercedes-Benz Retail at Watford and Sytner Group at Cheltenham & Gloucester) have been much more willing to strike a deal. Guess who gets my money?

I've found it best to start the negotiation on the phone, and agree the fundamentals of the deal before moving on to face-to-face discussions to close it. That way you quickly find out if they're likely to work with you to get a deal you're happy with and you can use time to your advantage in the negotiation.
