2 Years 2 months and 46K miles later all is well (still on the same front pads). Boot springs were sorted pre-delivery, CPS and air-con condensor under warranty, since then I think the MAF has been the only real non-service item replacement needed.
Hi - my first post here as I'm not yet a MB Owner (have driven a succession of Vauxhalls into the ground for the past 21 years I am thinking of treating myself now the eldest is off to university).
Looking at a '98, S, C240 Sport in local garage. Generally car seems very tidy, so think I'll take for a test drive - basics are obviously that all the goodies should work, the gearchange should be silky smooth and the engine smooth. What else should I be looking out for? Any particular gearbox tests I should do?
From a static viewing I have noticed:
- kevlar effect on B pillars has nearly worn off (particular on the rear doors), should I be suspicious that they have had to buff the car heavily to get it looking good, or is this normal at this age for the effect to wear off?
- very minor rust spot on one rear corner under the light just above the bumper (about 3mm across). I suspect this is at the bottom of the seam where the rear wing joins the rear panel.
- couple of rust tracks under the paint (5mm each), from a minor chip/defect on the boot lid
- boot feels very heavy when closing (wouldn't want to get in it's way), did read about broken counterbalance springs being an issue, likely? Or are they all like this? If it is a problem is it easy DIY fix (for a competent home mechanic), I would expect it to be (but if I know it's a fault I'll insist they fix it).
Thanks
Steve
