OK so i've been given some advice so far on this but as a side issue.
I had the soaked footwell problem and on pulling the carpet up i found this wire tucked under the plastic trim covering the sill. It didn't appear to be connected to anything, so a very light pull revealed it to be around...

My cruise control refused to turn on yesterday during a motorway run at 70mph.
Slightly annoying but I pressed on, thinking it might be the switch.
