Surely a sober passenger in a car driven by a driver over the limit should be culpable in some way?

A lifetime ban wouldn't be long enough for him and his partner in crime. Talent-less charlatans earning millions under false prentences!

No, the talentless charlatans are the workshy preening wannabees that jostle to appear on programmes for the brain dead like Love Island, TOWIE, Made in Chelsea, Big Brother etc etc etc.

You obviously dislike the pair of them, but don't let that cloud the fact they are good at their job of presenting prime time TV. It takes skill to do that.

Was she sober?

I agree with you. At the time it occured I did think she was just as culpable as her son. She let him drive and should have prevented it.

Mr McPartlin was dealt with fairly in terms of his fine as these are set down. His early guilty plea (which applies to everyone) saved him £42,000. He didnt have to turn up at court and chose to, to face the music and make a public apology.

A 20mth ban is on the higher side. The minimum is 12 months which is mandatory for drink/drug driving. Most first time offenders get 12 month bans unless they are hugely over the limit. Twice isnt huge. many are 3 or four times the limit. The court have made an example of him and at the very least a lot more of the population now understand the framework within which these offences are dealt with.

As for the calls about a failing justice system and fines going uncollected, those people should attend a fines court and see where those who dont pay are brought back before the court. We have a very good justice system in this country, one of the best in the world.

We have an appalling criminal justice system for many reasons including:

- Woeful detection rates (when the police do bother to investigate)
- 50% of fines going uncollected (and that's just the figure that governments will own up to)
- Community Service that is a doddle and which does nothing to deter
- Offenders avoiding prison or being released far too early due to lack of room in the system
- Understaffed and overcrowded prisons that are awash with drugs and which do nothing to deter, educate or rehabilitate
- Sky-high rates of reoffending

The list goes on but shouldn't need further expansion.

Seems odd depending on which way you look at it. It’s often reported celebrities getting off with offences e.g. speeding etc. Due to level of lawyer they can afford, and then again the druggie that had a police chase and wrecked alsorts gets a further ban and points etc.
He should have been treated like anyone, still not sure whether he has to be honest.

appalling is it...why not send the Government your CV , as there appears there is nothing you don't have an opinion on...

Unfortunately, it isn't a list of my opinions - it's a list of facts.

Anyway, aren't you supposed to be cranking away by now ?

We may or may not have an appalling justice system, but I think it (and our police) is still better than most of the rest of the world's.

They probably are.

But at the risk of bringing football into it, that's rather like an Ar$enal fan saying "Well we may have lost 11 league games this season and won't qualify for the Champions League but we're better than most of the rest of the Premiership".

It's no consolation at all knowing that the situation is worse elsewhere.

Possibly no consolation, but perhaps cause to reflect that running a justice system is neither easy nor cheap. We keep the garden as best we can with the tools we can afford....

But with better resourcing we could grow roses not ivy.....

The problem, as always, is resources. Almost everything any government controls could be greatly improved, but at the expense of something else. Without a bottomless pit of money, that is always the case. The end-user has no control over the allocation of resources.

We should be careful about saying that somebody/anybody? Celebrity or not, “gets away with it” by being able to pay for a “top lawyer”.

Many “top lawyers” are exactly that, at the top of their game. To get there, they put in the hard miles and study their specialist field in minute detail. In short this means that when asked to take on a case in their specialist field? Like a Consultant Surgeon who specialises in their chosen field - They will deliver the “best”

“Getting away with it” suggests that something dodgy was employed. When in reality it was skill, experience and knowledge.

Many years ago, I paid a considerable sum of money to have a “top” motoring lawyer defend me in a case I was told “I had zero chance of winning”. We won!

No gimmicks.
No tricks.
No brown envelopes.

Just a very, very bright, well researched lawyer who demolished the prosecution case with no more than the facts, evidence and truth.

My fee, saved my job and license. So relatively speaking it was money well spent.

.......and yes, I heard that “I got away with it”

Your 'facts' Scott. Where is the evidence? Do you have any direct experience of working in or with the justice system?

You seem to have a very negative view of just about every aspect of our society. You must be quite unhappy and troubled by all this. It really isnt that bad.....

What on earth is meant by 'Cranking away'?
