Hi there.

Is this price right?

I rang my local dealership and gave him the details: W210 1999 E class estate 300TD.

I couldn't give him the chassis number so he said it was likely to be the above oil.

I didn't get the grade but he said I would need 4 litres.

I think that bit is definately wrong.

The filter was quoted at £9.96 and gasket £7.17.

The thing is that I have a small fault and I want to use MB parts to see if the fault goes.

But doing further reading I found that I could use ATF Dexron ll. I do remember you guys saying only to use the OEM stuff but why?

Are there different quality ATF Dexron ll's on the market?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Don't use dex II. use the MB stuff.

You will need more than 4 litres too.

Do you want the part number of the correct oil?

I'll go back and find out how much it should be.

Does £9.50 per litre sound ok?

Make sure you flush it out properly. If you are unsure how to do it get an expert to do it for you.

Thanks again.

I have a hand op. vac. pump and lots of 'hot to' info courtesy of you guys and this forum.

I need to get meself a T45 1/2" drive socket now for the two bolts at the back, near the prop that are known to come loose.

Thanks again.

MB do a flushing oil for transmissions too.....BTW

Would you recommend doing this on a car that hesitates when setting off in first then unless you feather the throttle get a lurch.

I found Inchcape cheapest for oil, filter and gasket. Tried all different oil suppliers but all more expensive even the oil companys. The MB spec oil is difficult to get hold off unless you buy from MB.

You can sometimes find the oil on fleabay at around £3-£5 per litre...

If it has never been changed then yes.

Weather it will sort your problem I am not sure. It does sound luke a worn gearbox though:crazy:

Yep, you come to a stop and then set off and most of the time it is fine but the last couple of weeks it has a delay then a lurch.

The car has full MB service history but only 130K miles on the clock so it may not be due...I don't know.

Merc of Bedford changed the E500 (W124) transmission oil out on my car for £102 inc parts & VAT...Have you checked with the dealership for the total cost?

Car is Automatic transmission, year 1993.

They also changed the filter in the price...and offered to clean it inside and wash it as the technicians had never seen an E500!

Im not sure what MB use for the later cars, but the W124 takes normal Dexron II so it should be a lot cheaper..

i want to do this on my W124, as i am not sure if/when it was last changed. The car came with bags on reciepts and history so i guess if it had been done, it would be in there.

i am going to get a quote from MB Dealer for the work, and also a quote for the parts and weigh up if its worth them doing it or myself.

i have a local garage close to me so i am unsure whether to get them to do it but unsure if they will drain it all properly....

thanks

Derek
