£9.58/L for MB gearbox oil.

Merc of Bedford changed the E500 (W124) transmission oil out on my car for £102 inc parts & VAT...Have you checked with the dealership for the total cost?

Car is Automatic transmission, year 1993.

Dex II is fine for the 500E but the proper MB stuff is for the 722.6 box.

i want to do this on my W124, as i am not sure if/when it was last changed. The car came with bags on reciepts and history so i guess if it had been done, it would be in there.

i am going to get a quote from MB Dealer for the work, and also a quote for the parts and weigh up if its worth them doing it or myself.

i have a local garage close to me so i am unsure whether to get them to do it but unsure if they will drain it all properly....

thanks

Derek

Changing the transmission oil was part of the maintenence service on a 124 at a specific miliage so if it has MB history I suspect it has been done more than once.

Thats excatly the one i use.. comma... i think i buy it at about £8 trade so not too bad on the price there..

whoever does it needs to ensure the torque converter is drained.. if i was paying someone to do the job i would want to be able to see them work as you would never know if they had done it properly... same with brake fluid change etc...

I have heard horror stories of some dealers just syringing the fluid out of the reservoir and then topping up.. not changing pollen fiters and charging for them... just topping up auto fluid and not really changing etc etc...

i'll have another check thru the reciepts then. its got mostly MB Dealer history but a few independents aswell later on.

i'll probably change anyway just to be on the safe side - change from 3rd to 4th is not as smooth as i think it could be

exactly... when i buy a car for myself the first thing i do is change:

- brake fluid
- engine oil
- auto gearbox oil
- coolant
- all filters including fuel, air, pollen etc
- check diff oil
- check all other fluid levels

never rely on stamps in a book..

i'm tempted to do it myself. only problem is that i dont have ramps to lift the car, so its either axle-stands all round or trying to do it without lifting the car.... never done it before but looking at the "how-to"'s and a workshop manual i have it doesnt look to difficult.

its not difficult, but could be a little fiddly on the floor... remember not to over tighten the pan bolts, i think someone mentioned a measly 8nm which is just pinching it

Charles Ironside gave it a full service - oil change, etc, so i doubt i will be doing this straight away as i do trust all the invoices he has had done....

however its just gone on the 'veg so an oil change will be done within the next 6 months anyway.

thats another thing - i need to buy a torque wrench as i dont have one (wanted one anyway so dont mind)

anyone got all the part numbers i need for a W124? i read that i need new bolts once removed and obviously will need a new gasket etc. also how much is a dipstick & part number?

cheers!!!!

i havent got a torque wrench and i must have done this procedure over 20 times... just tighten them up evenly and dont be too heavy handed otherwise it splits the seal.

8NM is correct and its just a good safety barrier if you are not experianced withh the spanners.

You already have a dipstick. It comes free with the 124's

sounds like i'll be attempting this very soon then :)

can i expect the W124 (1994) model to be very similar to the W210 ParrotOfDoom's how-to, HERE ?
