Hey there,

I took delivery of my CLS 320 CDI yesterday and immediately bought the guide off eBay telling me how to unlock COMAND so it plays DVDs while the car is moving. However, I have tried many times to get into engineers mode using the MUTE + END CALL + SERVICE keys combination but to no avail. Anyone got any idea what I'm doing wrong or anything?

Thanks!

PS: I live in the UK so it's UK Spec.

IF ANYONE CAN GET THIS WORKING I WILL SEND YOU A GOOD FEW DOLLARS/POUNDS THROUGH PAYPAL!

Thanks to the internet engineering mode is no longer available to us owners. It can still be done with the right kind of diagnostic.

But surely that is illegal.

It is illegal to watch DVD's while driving... If the insurance company finds out after an accident, its hot soup...

Yeah I know it's illegal otherwise I wouldn't have to enter 'Engineers Mode' to allow it. I just wanted to know how to do it.

Well, disclaimers aside; unless you have an older COMAND system, you will need a special (MB proprietary) tool to get into engineer mode.

Try a friendly MB dealership ?

If insurance companies checked every claim then they'd not pay out for probably half of them, but it's cheaper to just pay up in the long-run and bump up the premiums accordingly!

I thought the W219 had the same Comand as the W211, and it worked fine for me!?

Are we saying MB has change this in the last few weeks/months? It certainly works on my car which is a 2005 model - delivered in March this year.

Is is a COMAND hardware change or simply a newer version of the software? - I guess if you can't access the ENG mode you can't check the software version.

Any tried it on a 2006 W211??

For those without a diagnostic or those that don't know how to use it the dream is over ... pretty much.

But if you do know someone with a diagnostic  then you may at least be able to recode your DVD region.

Miro,

Do you know if the older COMANDS will automatically get updated when the car gets a scheduled service?

The thing I find amazing is that MbenzNL who is an authority on this subject has stated that you might ruin the COMAND by attempting to access the Engineer's Menu. I have stated that Mercedes-Benz will NOT repair any COMAND that has been made inoperable by fiddling; yet we still insist on playing with something that we know nothing about?????

Me??......... Press buttons!!! Never, I just simply turned it on and it refuses to work!

Just like those drivers that NEVER watch DVD's whilst the car is in motion, it is only there for the children..... Honest :o

Why, why why does anyone want DVD's to watch from the front seats. Very young children should surely be sat in the rear of hte car, and older ones can have some 'grown-up time' actually talking to mum or dad? ;)

Ooops... going into rant mode

Regards,
John the ranter

In some workshops yes. The disc came out recently in Mercedes ordering. All it does is block distraction and keyboard manipulation.

This is a very interesting thread and one that crops up all over the place on other forums also. A few things/thoughts of my own on the subject.

I do have the unlocking/engineering code sequence and I do have an '05 comand and I did once unlock mine to show 'DVD in motion'. I'll be honest here and tell you that I got about ten yards up my drive and guilt kicked in so I turned around, turned things off, and set everything back to as was.

But, when all is said and done, in most cases the car + options belong to the owner/driver and why should he or she be denied full and free access to every function of his or her equipment?. I'll accept that DVD in motion is a bit like moths to a flame in some instances, as it was with me, and it's also very much illegal but, we should at least be able to access the full workings of the unit. After all, we have full access to the full travel of the throttle pedal dont we?, and thats very much illegal.

Also, as the comand is mine/ours and not part of the 'usual' service schedule items how would we stand if we were to say something along the lines of "keep your hands off matey" and decline any updates free or otherwise because, as I said, the unit is the property of the owner and nothing within it is safety related.

I know that we would not be covered from a warranty point of view if we screwed it up, I accept that, but what if we were to buy a spare from Alfie or MBNZL, use that as our main unit and shove the original back in come service time so thay can update to their hearts content?

Not a rant and neither do I advocate DVD in motion and equally I dont judge others who do but, I feel that we should be free to have a say or access the full features of what is in fact our own property.

I blame that Tony Blair guy, Maggie would have given us the codes:rolleyes: .

Portzy.

Maggie would have waited till someone in Argentina got it and then beaten it out of them.

Hi Portzy,
I understand where your coming from, but in my experience there are countless modern items that have these engineers codes, which are designed to make life easier for those that have the knowledge to use them. As I'm typing I'm thinking about our washing machine?? (all this clean living)

Is there a need for a lay person to 'play' with something we know nothing about? Would anyone have heard about this 'secret' menu without logging into a specialist forum? My son is a terror for pressing buttons, then if all else fails, he might read the manual.

The COMAND is our property and you have made some very good points, but I dare you to go into the BIOS set-up of your computer and start altering settings that you are not familar with?

Regards,
John

Going off topic I have been in a Taxi in Europe with a DVD player in the front. Driver is watching an English movie as he drives, reading the foreign subtitles as he did not speak English. He laughed in all the right places. It was not the most relaxing taxi ride I have ever had!

His driving was not too bad considering his blatant viewing, but he was obviously distracted.

At least he was ok with the authorities though - Police totally ignored his DVD playing while they nicked him for parking in a non taxi designated drop off space at the airport!

I actually saw a bus driver driving whilst reading his newspaper which was resting on the steeering wheel!!

Hopefully you are aware of the French lorry driver that was watching a film whilst driving on a UK motorway and ploughed into a stationary car, killing the occupants. He denied watching the movie (shock of shocks) he was merely 'listening' to it. Yes he got away with it, as no one could prove he was actually watching the film. The dead certainly could not testify and NO ONE that has had the modification EVER watches films   it is done solely for their children
