Does the variant setting menu still work since your slip up?

Press and hold 5 and then also 3 and then also 7 - after a few secs you should get the variant menu where you can hopefully select W219_ECE and then via the top left soft button called "keypad", also select the same model.

In theory that should take you back to ECE spec with the correct menus and soft keys.....(or possibly to the point where the correct head update will load).

Can't the local dealer just wipe it and blast it back to factory defaults ? I know they tried a DVD - but it sounds to my un-educated ears like they used the wrong DVD as well - hence the variant message.

well, i think the dealer here do not know much about comand updates. we have tried many service update cd but none could work. Except for Service CD (w211 589 00 22 00) where the comand display "No Config File" others Service CD (W211 589 06 22 00, W211 589 13 22 00) will return "Wrong Variant"

Even when using DAS SDS, the Control Unit Programming is not possible using DAS but Service Update CD programming is possible.

I think i am used to this version now. Didnt feel any different as i rarely use the DVD anyway. Its just my curiosity. Thinking of getting the satellite radio instead.

My dealer suggests (but has not tried!):

1. set variant & keys to ECE as above.
2. go to SERV/RESET and perform the reset.
3. load the 211 589 13 22 00 firmware.
4. reset again

If this fails, there is a method - maybe your format flash one - to erase and start again, using the 13 22 00 firmware. He said it needs the car on Star and remote assistance from Merc?

firstly, yeah i admit its my mistake or maybe curiousity that had bring me this problem. But its legal in malaysia to have dvd in motion. i am not trying to get cheap solution to this problem here but to share my experience exploring the comand with you all.

i shall post if i ever get this solved. thanks for ur comment anyway...

What a strange country to allow dvd in motion, but make a handheld cell phone illegal.

remember that when you change the comand model variant coding using 3-5-7 then you must turn of the comand, take out the ignition key, and wait a few minutes before the change takes effect. This caught me out, I thought the change would be immediate........

............Kenny did you get the update to work - it appears that several of us currently have the 'wrong variant' problem when trying to update comand firmware.

I have successfully change the variant and keyboard to ECE as suggested but the Video button is still Satellite Radio. When i insert the update cd it still display "Wrong Variant".

I dont know anything on remote assistant from Merc and i will ask my dealer about it. BTW my dealer have forward my complaints to the German HQ. Hopefully we will get some replies by next week.
